After breakfast, Xavier carried her to the bathroom to wash up, and then Aveline went back to work
Xavier said he was going back to his room to change. Not long after he left, his phone, which was on the nightstand, rang.
Aveline was sitting on the edge of the bed working on her laptop. She glanced over and saw it was a call from Gerald.
Since no one answered, it rang for a bit and then stopped. Then, Gerald sent a text.
Aveline didn’t pick it up to look, so she didn’t know what he had sent.
Xavier came back after changing his clothes. Aveline didn’t tell him his phone had rung. He picked up a book and sat on the sofa to read.
A little while later, the doorbell rang. He got up to open the door and saw Gerald outside.
Xavier frowned slightly, stepped out, and pulled the door almost shut. “What is it?”
Gerald’s face was a little grim. “I called you and texted you. Why didn’t you reply? Are you trying
to cut me off?”
Xavier said flatly, “I didn’t see it.
If you have something to say, say it.”
Gerald didn’t seem to believe him. He scoffed and then said, “I didn’t come here specifically to get close to Aveline. Josie was worried about her foot injury and asked me to come check on her.”
As he spoke, Gerald looked toward the other end of the hallway.
Xavier looked over too and saw Josephine standing in the distance, looking their way as if she didn’t dare to come closer
Xavier looked away. “Since you’re not the one who’s concerned, why should I waste my breath on you?”
With that, he turned to go back into the room.

Gerald snorted. “Who would care about her? Only Josie is kind enough to worry about her and still thinks of her as a sister.”
Xavier stopped, turned back, and said, “Stay away from Josephine and her mother, Courtney.”
After saying that, he went into the room and closed the door.
Gerald glared at the door. “Did Aveline give him a love potion or something? How did he suddenly change so much?”
He went back to Josephine’s side. Josephine quickly asked him, “What did Xav say?”
“He wouldn’t tell me anything.
Josie, forget it. You’re nice to Aveline, but she won’t appreciate it.”
Josephine smiled nonchalantly. “I don’t need my sister to appreciate it. I’m genuinely worried
about her.
But since Xav didn’t tell you anything, it probably isn’t serious.”
Gerald said, “Then you can rest easy. Let’s go back to the city.”
Josephine shook her head. “Gerald, if you have things to do, you should go back to the city first. The movie’s on hold anyway, so I’ll just stay here for a few days. Maybe if Xav has to go back, I can help take care of my sister.”
Gerald said helplessly, “Why are you so naive? There’s no way Aveline would let you take care of
her.”
“I’m staying anyway.”
Gerald really had work to do and had to return to the city. He couldn’t convince Josephine, but then he remembered that Dylan was also here, so Josephine would have someone to look after her. So, he went back to the city.
Xavier returned to the room and said to Aveline, “It was Gerald, asking about your foot injury.”
Aveline said nothing, her eyes glued to the computer screen, scolling internally that Gerald would care about her foot. She was lucky he wasn’t cursing her.
Xavier went to the bar cabinet, poured and drank a glass of water, then refilled it and handed it to Aveline.
