Josephine looked up at Xavier. Even under the dim, yellow lights of The Blossom Garden, she could see the icy coldness in his deep, dark eyes, and it made her shudder.
Xavier shot her a glance, then turned and walked away.
Josephine bit her lip, not regretting her actions, because she had come tonight specifically to cause trouble for Xavier and Aveline.
The whole point was to make these distinguished guests mistakenly believe that she and Xavier were intimate.
She walked toward the wealthy woman, the one who had seen everything clearly from the very beginning.
She chuckled and said, “Steven, you’re certainly bold, hugging Mr. Beltran just like that.”
Before she went to find Xavier, Josephine had been talking to this Patricia Dawson, implying her relationship with Xavier was special, but Patricia had sarcastically accused her of making it up to make herself look good.
Josephine smiled faintly and pushed her hair back, “Patricia, I told you, Mr. Beltran pursued me once. We dated, but you wouldn’t believe me. What could I do?”
Patricia laughed, “So you went and hugged Mr. Beltran just to show me, so I would believe you?”
“It wasn’t really for you. I broke up with him, and Mr. Beltran wasn’t happy about it. He’s been angry with me these past few days. That hug just now was our final goodbye.”
Patricia chuckled, “Director Sutton, you’re quite something.”
Josephine wasn’t sure what she really meant. “Patricia, what do
you mean?”
“Heh, it could mean a lot of things. I don’t even know where to start.
But, Director Sutton, you’re beautiful, and it seems like you can afford to be picky with men, but in our circle, it’s the men who are in charge.”
“Director Sutton, don’t play with fire too much, or you’ll get burned. Xavier is not someone to be
messed with.”

Chapter 578
“If you and Mr. Beltran were really a thing, then breaking up with him was a smart move. Choosing a man like John is a safer bet.”

Josephine’s expression turned cold. “Patricia, I’ve already told you, John and I don’t have that kind of relationship. A friend just asked me to be his date for this party.”
Patricia took a sip of her wine, her tone teasing. “I get it. If it were me, I’d choose Mr. Beltran too. Who doesn’t like a man who’s young, handsome, rich, and capable?”
“I heard Mr. Beltran is engaged. Since you say you’re close to him, Ms. Sutton, you must know if it’s true, and who she is?”
Josephine said irritably, “I don’t know. He never mentioned it. The rumor is probably fake.”
Patricia laughed. “Yes, it could be fake. What woman engaged to Xavier wouldn’t be shouting it from the rooftops?”
“Just like you. You might have dated Mr. Beltran, and you told me all about it, even though we’ve just met, right?”
Patricia’s passive–aggressive sarcasm was getting on Josephine’s nerves, but there was nothing she could do about the wealthy woman.
Josephine understood. This was the confidence that came from a powerful background. Both her husband’s family and her maiden home were prominent, so she didn’t hesitate to make fun of her.
Josephine seethed inwardly. If she and Xavier had really gotten together, this Patricia would only be sucking up to her. How would she dare mock her like this?
Patricia saw that Josephine was unhappy and felt she had had enough fun messing with the shameless illegitimate daughter, so she said:
“Let’s go
back. I see John keeps looking over here. He seems worried about you.”
Josephine looked toward John and couldn’t help but feel disgusted, but she had no choice but to return to his side.
As for Aveline, she didn’t want to deal with Xavier, so she wasn’t paying any attention to where ̧
he was.
