Courtney, with one hand on her belly and the other on her hip, said, “Before you issued that statement, Aveline had already publicly disowned you as her father.”
Jacob was so angry he was speechless.
Just then, Gloria came downstairs. “What are you two arguing about?”
Courtney glanced back at the old woman, a plan forming in her mind. “Send your mother to Mount Ardwood to beg Aveline every day. She’ll get so annoyed she can’t work, and maybe she’ll agree to give you the project.”
Gloria was shocked. “You want me to go put on a show for Aveline? I’m too old for this. Can’t you two stop putting me through this?”
“Jacob, I struggled to raise you and your older brother. Now I’m old and supposed to be enjoying my life. How can you still put me through this?”
Jacob looked at his old mother and said nothing, because he thought Courtney’s idea might actually work.
Courtney snorted. “Mom, Aveline is staying at the Beltran Hotel in Mount Ardwood. It’s a luxury hotel, with great food and drinks every day. How is following her a hardship? It’ll be more comfortable than living here.”
Gloria had lived a hard life before Jacob made his fortune and had always considered staying in a hotel a great luxury. Hearing Courtney say this, she exclaimed in surprise:
“Aveline works in Mount Ardwood, and she lives and eats at the hotel?”
“That’s right. You’ve seen how luxurious the’s hotels are. Besides, Aveline is Xavier’s wife, so she’s probably staying in the presidential suite.”
“Have Jacob take you there for a while. Go and enjoy yourself.”
Gloria was tempted.
Whether or not she could convince Aveline to give the project to Jacob, at the very least, staying in a hotel for a few days to enjoy herself sounded pretty good.
Courtney added, “By the way, I heard Xavier might have bought a villa in Mount Ardwood. If

you could stay in the villa, that would be even better.”
“Just think of it as going on vacation to see your granddaughter.”
Gloria looked at Jacob. “Jacob, can I?”

Jacob was only focused on getting that project; otherwise, his company might really go bankrupt. So he said:
“Fine. I’ll take you there.”
“But, I’m just worried Aveline won’t let you stay there.”
As he spoke, he looked over at Courtney, hoping she would give him an idea.
Courtney smiled contemptuously, thinking to herself what an idiot Jacob was. He still had to rely on her brains.
This man had spent his whole life relying on women.
The first half of his life, he relied on his original wife; the second half, on his second wife.
Courtney sat down. “My legs are a bit swollen. Come over and give them a massage.

Jacob quickly sat down next to her, lifted one of her legs, and started massaging her calf.
Gloria watched them, frowning with displeasure. “Back when I was pregnant with Wu and Jacob, I was terribly swollen too. But their father worked so hard, and I felt so bad for him, I would never have let him give me a massage.”
“I just dragged my two swollen legs around, managed the household, did the laundry, and cooked.”
Courtney said coolly, “You had it rough back then, ma’am. Times are different now. Jacob is a modern man; he knows to appreciate how hard pregnancy is for his wife.”
