Chapter 351
I couldn’t stop thinking about how he had deleted a message when he thought I had been asleep. Even though he was right beside me, it felt like there was a small distance between us. I was afraid it was because he was hiding something from me. Right now, I needed some space to sort out my feelings.
When the elevator doors slid open on my floor, Alexander crushed me in a tight hug, held my face between his hands, and kissed me until I was breathless.
“Until I see you again,” he whispered against my lips.
I walked out of the elevator on shaking legs. Alexander was such a good kisser. It was going to be harder to avoid him than I originally thought.
“Mom? Dad?” I called when I entered my apartment.
No one answered, and just from the quiet atmosphere of the room, I could tell that they weren’t here. On the counter was a note written in my mom’s handwriting.
‘Darling,
Your father’s work called, and we had to leave this morning because there was an emergency, and he was needed back ASAP. I’m sorry that we had to leave so suddenly. Thank you for a lovely dinner last night. If you feel up to it, you are more than welcome to come to our house tomorrow night. Hope to see you soon!
XOXO,
Mom and Dad‘
My shoulders slumped. I felt awful that I wasn’t here to drive them to the train station and say goodbye. I couldn’t believe that my own parents had to take a cab. I was the worst daughter in the world.
This morning had started so well, and now I felt like gum stuck under someone’s shoe.
With a sigh, I heated up leftovers from last night, ate quickly, poured a glass of red wine, and then started a bath for myself. I watched the hot water spray out of the spout as I sipped the sweet wine. My stomach sank as I stared into my glass. Even wine reminded me of Alexander.

A quiet moan escaped my lips as I slipped into the warm bubble bath. I put my phone and my glass of wine on the edge of the tub. I’d turned the lights off and placed vanilla–scented candles around the bathroom. I leaned my head back against the cool porcelain and tried to relax.
But I couldn’t get my mind off the suspicious way Alexander acted earlier in the car.
I picked up my phone just as it vibrated. I had a new message request from someone named Jess Wood. That name seemed vaguely familiar.
Oh! I remembered where I knew that name. She was the infamous woman that Alexander had a love/hate relationship with. They had been in an on again/off again for a long time until Alexander broke things off for good. That was when Jess became obsessive over Alexander and stalked him.
A cold shiver went down my spine as I opened up her message. A sense of foreboding made my stomach queasy. Jess’s message was short and to the point. All it said was that she was going to be visiting next Wednesday.
This news wasn’t good.
But maybe it explained Alexander’s strange behavior in the car earlier. The message he deleted could have been from Jess. Come to think of it, this could also explain what his sister said to him this morning. Macey had told him that their mother was warning him to be careful. Maybe his mother was warning him about Jess.
