After I purchased a new phone and SIM card, I hailed a cab. Right after I gave the driver my parents‘ address, I switched on my new phone. Thankfully, the worker transferred all of my old contacts and pictures onto my new phone.
As soon as my phone turned on, I noticed I had fifteen missed calls from Alexander. When I called him back, he answered on the second ring.
“Why haven’t you been answering your phone?” he demanded. “I’ve been worried sick!”

I reared back like he slapped me. I didn’t appreciate his accusatory tone.
I had a perfectly reasonable explanation for not answering my phone. If he was so worried about me, why didn’t he walk downstairs and check on me? Did he expect me to stay in contact with him twenty–four–seven?
I opened my mouth to tell him off, but then I thought better about it. Even though Alexander’s tone was short, I could hear the worry behind his words. He didn’t know that my phone had been broken last night, and he probably thought I was ignoring him or–even worse–that something awful had happened to me.
I tried to put myself in his shoes and think about how I would feel if he hadn’t contacted me all day. I would worry and assume something bad had happened to him.
I took a deep breath in and let it out slowly. I needed to calm down before I responded rashly and said something I would later regret.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t get a chance to talk to you last night,” I said in a slow and soothing voice. “I accidentally dropped my phone in the bath last night, and it broke. I just bought a new one from the store.”
Alexander was silent on the other end of the line. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as I waited impatiently for his response. “Oh, okay. That’s a reasonable excuse.” He let out a deep breath that it sounded like he had been holding all night. “I was so worried that something bad happened to you when you were out sightseeing with your parents. I almost went to your apartment hundreds of times last night, but I didn’t want to intrude on your time with your parents.”
