Chapter 118 The Best
Alden frowned at her words. “Married? Who did Uncle Lucien marry? That girlfriend from his Instagram?”
Alyssa’s smile turned mysterious. “I wouldn’t know about that. But I’m sure she must be gorgeous, sweet, and kind–hearted. Otherwise, how could she have Uncle Lucien so completely smitten, right?”
Alden looked confused.
Since when had Alyssa and Lucien become so close?
Lucien had always kept his distance from the younger generation, maintaining a cool, aloof relationship with them.
The main issue was his cold personality. When those icy eyes turned their way, they sent chills down their spine.
Luna, who loved stirring up competition, piped up, “Ha, Alyssa, you seem really fond of Uncle Lucien’s wife. Have you actually met her?”
All eyes immediately turned to Alyssa.
Joanne pressed further. “Alyssa, you’ve really seen her? Oh, honey, why didn’t you tell us? What’s she like? Which family is she from? Must be a good one too, right?”

Luna chimed in sweetly. “Any woman Uncle Lucien would choose has to be extraordinary.”
Alyssa’s eyes flickered. No way was she letting Kaia get dragged through the mud like this!
“Aunt Joanne, I haven’t actually met Uncle Lucien’s wife, but I don’t think Uncle Lucien is that shallow. Every wealthy heiress in New York would kill to marry Uncle Lucien, but he wouldn’t even glance at them. So Uncle Lucien values what’s inside a person.”
She shot a pointed look at Luna. “But inner beauty isn’t something just anyone can have.”
Luna’s face darkened. That look from Alyssa was obviously meant for her.
But the rest of the family didn’t catch on.
Allen thought for a moment. “Alyssa’s right. Lucien has always demanded the best since he was young. He can’t stand anything less than perfect. The person he chose must be exceptional.”
“Exactly, Grandpa! I was thinking the same thing! You’re so wise!” Alyssa chimed in eagerly.
Luna pressed her lips together. What did he mean by “the best“? Was Allen suggesting she wasn’t good enough?

Her grip on Alden’s arm tightened without her realizing it.
Alden glanced down at her. “What’s wrong, Luna?”
Luna forced a strained smile. “Nothing. Just a little stomach
ache.”
Alden nodded absently. “Yeah, probably your period is coming.”
Luna’s heart sank. Her period had just ended, and Alden used to remember every little detail about her.
Her eyes started to sting.
Why does it feel like he’s drifting further away from me?
We’re about to get married…
Joanne had no interest in listening to Allen praise Lucien anymore. She turned the conversation toward Alden and Luna instead. “Alden, when are you and Luna getting your marriage license?”
The unexpected question caught Alden off guard. “We’ll get it in a few days.”
Joanne’s face scrunched up. “Get it done tomorrow! You already did the wedding photos. Why drag your feet about some paper?”
Since Joanne had come to terms with Luna being Alden’s wife

instead of her daughter, they should’ve just tied the knot already.
Allen’s smile faded slightly. “Yeah, go ahead and get it. Since Lucien is getting married, you two should do the same.”
Luna’s eyes lit up with hope as she looked at Alden. He’d been putting off getting their marriage license for too long.
Alden pressed his lips. “Got it. I’ve got work tomorrow, so we’ll go get it the day after, first thing in the morning.”
Luna, who’d seemed so fragile moments before, instantly perked up, color returning to her cheeks. “Really, Alden?”
Looking at the girl he’d spoiled since childhood, seeing nothing but pure affection shining in her bright eyes, Alden could only swallow his bitterness. “Really. Sorry for making you wait.”
Alyssa quietly rolled her eyes.
Ugh, who wanted to watch this lovey–dovey act?
“Grandpa, my phone’s broken. I’m going to get it fixed and won’t be back for dinner.” Alyssa waved as she headed out.
She said she was fixing her phone, but really, she was planning
to squeeze some money out of Lucien. After all, he’d stolen away her best friend!
