Chapter 123 She Misses Me
“I thought everything was done already?”

Luna’s face darkened with anger. She stormed forward. “So it’s okay for you staff to gossip behind our backs?
“This is the first I’ve heard that getting a marriage license comes with an expectation to bribe the employees. What a bunch of greedy opportunists.”
“Hey, watch your mouth,” one of the staff replied with a mocking sneer. “We didn’t name names. Since when is chatting illegal?”
Another staff member echoed, “She’s seriously hypersensitive. Miss, if you don’t have the means to impress, maybe show some humility.”
“What did you just say?” Luna’s eyes widened. “Say it again–I will report you!”
Alden’s jaw tensed, a vein pulsing at his temple. “That’s enough. Luna, just get your ID. No need for the drama.”
This whole scene was already embarrassing enough. The longer she dragged it out, the more ridiculous it became.
The staff, now emboldened, smirked as he reached for a drawer. “Your ID, right? Here–it’s been right here with us the whole time. See, if we weren’t kind enough to keep it safe, you would’ve lost it for good.”

Without another word, she turned and fled the hall, covering her face as she cried.
Alden exhaled, frustrated. The awkward stares from the onlookers only made it worse.
“What are you looking at? Never seen a couple argue before?” he snapped, then chased after her.
Behind them, one of the staff snorted, “Those two? No way they last. I’ll bet fifty cents they’re divorced in under a year.”
“Cut it out. Watch your mouth,” someone else muttered. “Talk like that and you’ll jinx yourself.”
The registration hall gradually quieted again.
Outside, Joanne had been waiting in the car. The moment she saw Luna running out in tears, she immediately jumped out. “Luna, what happened? Why are you crying?”
Luna’s cheeks were stained with tears as she looked up at Joanne. “Alden… he…”
She wanted to complain, to vent, and to tell someone how awful he had been. But as she stared at Joanne, she remembered—this was Alden’s mother. Whatever she said would likely be brushed off with a few comforting but empty words.
Today was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. And yet, the moment they received that marriage license, everything suddenly felt wrong.

Meanwhile, Kaia was radiant with joy as she returned to work. The lightness in her step did not go unnoticed—especially by Jason, who raised a curious brow. “Mrs. Graves, did something good happen today?”
If it turned out to be a pregnancy, that would be fantastic.
Kaia gave a small, knowing smile. “Did Lucien say what time he’ll be home tonight?”
She was trying to work something out. If Julian had secretly opened the door for her return to work, the only explanation would be Lucien. And if that were true, she wanted to hear it
from him.
Kaia didn’t think her random comment would make Jason call
Lucien right then.
He said, “Mr. Graves, Mrs. Graves wants to know when you’re coming home tonight. She might be missing you. Looks like she’s got some big news for you.”
Lucien glanced at the evening dinner plans Frank had just sent to his phone. His eyes lowered a bit. “She’s that happy?” he murmured.
“Yes! She’s in a really good mood today! Mr. Graves, do you think Mrs. Graves might be pregnant?” Jason asked, sounding far too enthusiastic.
Baeten fell silent.

They had barely even held hands. How could she possibly be pregnant?
Of course, he had no intention of explaining that to Jason. His voice, cool and calm, broke the silence. “I’ll be home by six. Jason, let the housekeeper know to make extra food–she likes fish.”
“Got it, Mr. Graves. I’ll let Mrs. Graves know right away!”
As soon as the call ended, a faint smile tugged at Lucien’s lips. He leaned back, savoring those words more than he cared to admit.
She misses me? Then why didn’t she call me herself?
Just then, Frank knocked and stepped into the office. “Mr. Graves, the driver’s waiting downstairs.”
Lucien gave a slight nod. “Tell Mr. Mitchell I won’t be able to make it tonight–something came up.”
Frank paused. Canceling just ten minutes before they were supposed to leave? That was seriously low.
“It’s fine,” Lucien said calmly. “Just tell him I’ll make it up to him next time. Use those exact words. He’ll understand.”
Frank pressed his lips together. “Understood. Is this because of another meeting with someone else?”
Lucién raised a brow, almost amused. “No. My wife just said she misses me. I should go home and see her.”

Frank stood frozen for a moment. Then he exhaled.
Mr. Graves, honestly, no one could out–flirt you.

Kaia, meanwhile, had no idea Jason painted her as the picture–perfect sweet wife.
As she watched the housekeeper bustling in the kitchen, she offered, “Why don’t I cook tonight?”
She glanced around, suddenly curious. “What does Lucien usually like to eat?”
The housekeeper blinked, caught off guard. “Actually, Mr. Graves never really says. He usually eats a little of everything. I can’t tell what he likes most!”
Then, as if remembering something, she added, “Wait, he did like eating fish. Maybe try fish? I’ll help you prep it. You just need to marinate it and steam it.”
“Fish?” Kaia raised her eyebrows, surprised.
It was unexpected, but oddly sweet to know they had similar
tastes.
She smiled, “Sure. You clean it, I’ll season and cook it.”
By Just after six, Lucien arrived at the villa on the dot.

He slipped off his blazer, stepped out of his leather shoes, and changed into the matching house slippers Kaia had bought. As he walked through the entryway, the scent of home–cooked food drifted out from the kitchen.
His eyes landed on the woman standing at the counter, a soft green apron tied around her waist, her figure gently curved as she leaned forward, chopping vegetables with full concentration.
Warmth filled his chest. This was his wife. And she was cooking
for him.
Jason was already at the dining table, helping set the plates. “Mr. Graves, you’re back.”
