Chapter 148 Already on Nickname
Basis
Oh crap…
A sinking feeling crept in, and Kaia couldn’t shake the thought that this Mr. Marsh everyone kept talking about might be the same guy Jude had wanted to set her up with.
Jasper laughed. “With how busy he is every day, of course, he’s still single.” Then, all of a sudden, he turned to Kaia and asked, “What about you, Ms. Domont? Got a boyfriend?”
Kaia forced a crooked smile, trying to play it cool while her brain scrambled for an answer. Part of her wanted to blurt out that she had a husband, not a boyfriend.
But Jude cut in before she could speak, chucking, “Nope. She just broke up with some jerk.”
Part of her wanted to blurt out that she had a husband, not a boyfriend.
Jude shot a look at the person who asked and made a face. “Let’s not get into that.”
Some people were already catching on to why he had brought his apprentice to the gathering. No one said anything, but the shift in their expressions said it all. They were eyeing Kaia differently now, with a quiet sense of curiosity.

As the conversation went on, the door to the private room opened, and a man with sharp features stepped in. “Sorry, I’m late.”
He wore silver-rimmed glasses and a crisp white shirt, his presence clean and composed. This was none other than the prosecutor they had just been talking about-Gilbert Marsh.
Gilbert offered the group a polite smile, but when his eyes landed on Kaia, he paused slightly, clearly surprised to see an unfamiliar face at the table.
“You finally made it. Come, sit here,” Jasper called out, gesturing to the empty seat right next to Kaia.
Kaia felt a flicker of awkwardness. She couldn’t help but think she really shouldn’t have come to this dinner.
Gilbert smiled and took a seat as if he belonged there. “Mr. Halston, is this the impressive Ms. Domont you mentioned
before?”
Kaia hadn’t expected him to recognize her. She stood and gave a polite nod. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Marsh. I’m Kaia Domont, but just Kaia is fine.”
Jude grinned from ear to ear. “You’ve got a great memory, Mr. Marsh. I only mentioned her once.”

He felt quietly triumphant. He had known Gilbert wouldn’t be able to resist his apprentice’s charm. The real question now was whether Kaia would find him interesting.
Gilbert, on his part, was captivated by Kaia. Her beauty was undeniable, and it was only natural to be drawn to someone so stunning.

Landon relaxed when he saw that Lucien had shown up alone. He had genuinely worried Lucien might bring his wife again.
With a questioning look, Lucien asked, “How come we didn’t pick Prosperity Hotel?”
Landon let out a sigh. “Calvin’s dad set him up with a blind date. They’re in the private room next door. He told us to stop by later, say hi, and then help get him out of there.”
Lucien gave a dry laugh. “That doesn’t really sound like my place.”
Landon replied, “It’d be awkward if I went. But you’re in the same generation as his dad, so it’s less weird.”
That threw Lucien for a loop. Did he just call me old?
Landon added quickly, “No shade, really. You’ve just got a higher rank on the family tree, that’s all. Anyway, where is Kaia?

Lucien glanced at him coolly. “Didn’t you tell me not to bring my wife? Besides, her company is doing a team outing today. She couldn’t make it.”
With that, he lifted his wrist to check the time, his eyes lingering on the watch. “So, when exactly are we supposed to go and get Calvin?”
Landon replied, “Give it another ten minutes. That should be enough.”
As Landon led Lucien toward the next room, Lucien noticed an open door across the hall. Through it, he glimpsed a dazzling smile and sparkling eyes directed at another man.
Lucien’s eyes twitched hard. So this is what she meant by team outing?
When Landon saw Lucien suddenly freeze, he followed Lucien’s gaze to see what had caught his attention.
Inside, Kaia was smiling at another man.
Though Lucien’s face remained as stoic as ever, Landon knew his friend well enough to sense the jealousy simmering beneath that cold mask.
Meanwhile, Kaia already regretted showing up tonight. She

should give Jude a serious talking-to when she got home. She had told him she was done with blind dates, yet here she was, caught in another setup.
Sitting beside her, Gilbert seemed to pick up on her discomfort. He offered a mild reassurance. “Don’t mind them. They just like to tease. You’re in criminal defense too?”
Kaia shook her head. “No, I work in civil law, Mr. Marsh. Well, I also handle some corporate advisory work.”
Gilbert smiled, “I’m not much older than you, so just call me by my name. Or if that still feels too formal, Bert works too.”
Kaia gave a polite smile, but her thoughts were uneasy.
Wow, we’re already on a nickname basis?
Before Kaia could hold the smile in place much longer, a cold, flat voice sounded from behind her, low and unmistakably sharp. “Oh, what a coincidence, Mr. Halston. Is this a company outing?”
She jerked her head up, and the moment her eyes met those cold, unyielding ones, her heart gave a sudden jolt.
