“Mr. Graves?” Jude stood up right away, clearly surprised. “It’s not exactly a company outing, just a casual get-together with some peers.”

He turned to the group and chuckled, “You guys are in luck tonight. This is Mr. Lucien Graves, CEO of the Graves Group.” Then, he turned back around. “These are a few of my classmates. They’re all lawyers.”

Jasper and Patrick stood up as well. They had, of course, heard of the Graves Group. Though they’d seen Lucien’s distinctive sharp features and cold demeanor in photos and from afar, this was their first time encountering the man himself.

“Mr. Graves, it’s a pleasure,” Jasper said.

Patrick chimed in, “An honor to finally meet you, Mr. Graves.”

Kaia, on the other hand, froze in her seat. What is he doing here?

Lucien’s deep-set eyes swept across the group, pausing as if by chance. He raised a brow slightly, saying, “Hello. Well, is this gentleman also a lawyer, Mr. Halston?” He was pointing straight at Gilbert.

Gilbert, though young, instantly picked up on the undercurrent of hostility. Still, he stayed composed. “Pleasure to meet you,

Mr. Graves. I’m Gilbert Marsh. Just a humble prosecutor.”

His tone was polite, but there was a quiet edge to his words, something faint and hard to pin down. Maybe it came from his line of work, since he never seemed to care much for trust-fund kids and corporate heirs.

Gilbert had heard of the Graves Group and just assumed this man was the same CEO who was always trending online.

Lucien gave Gilbert a lingering look. “A prosecutor? Well now… that’s impressive for someone so young.”

He was complimenting Gilbert, technically, but his voice was anything but warm.

Kaia sneaked a glance at Lucien, only to meet his gaze head-on. In those deep, unreadable eyes, she could see her own reflection.

Jude, always quick on the uptake, sensed something was off with Lucien today and jumped in to smooth things over. “He really is impressive for his age. Are you dining here too, Mr. Graves? Why don’t you join us for a bit?”

He only asked out of courtesy, never expecting Lucien to actually take a seat and join their conversation.

Kaia immediately lowered her head, silently hoping he would turn down the offer.

Her hopes were dashed as Lucien responded, “It would be my honor to dine with such accomplished company.”

Kaia was stunned speechless. She turned her head away in resignation and kept praying he would at least sit farther down the table.

Jude glanced around the table, about to offer Lucien the seat at the head, but Lucien didn’t seem interested in taking it.

With barely a thought, Lucien pointed and said, “No need for the fuss. I’ll just take your seat, Mr. Halston. Would you mind moving?”

Kaia could only sit there, stunned.

Please, just let the ground swallow me up. At least that would make things more interesting for everyone.

Jude looked surprised again but forced a smile. “Alright then, Mr. Graves. Hope it’s not too much of an inconvenience.”

Lucien gave a small, unreadable smile. “Not at all. I’m more than happy to.”

The conversation at the table immediately shifted from Gilbert to Lucien, who became the center of attention in an instant.

Kaia was stuck in the seat next to the spotlight. She kept her head down, quietly eating, hoping no one would drag her into

the conversation. All she wanted was to fade into the background and quietly make it through the night.

Of course, things never went as planned. Gilbert, knocked out of the spotlight, was now trying his best to regain some attention.

Noticing that Kaia had finished the fish on her plate, he offered, “Want some more?” Without waiting for a response, he kindly moved a piece from his own plate onto hers.

Kaia instantly felt a chill run down her spine. She didn’t even have to look up to feel the cold stare aimed at her from the side. She quickly said, “No, it’s fine, Mr. Marsh. You have it.”

Gilbert smiled, “It’s alright, Kaia. I told you, just call me by my name. Bert works too.”

Bert? Seriously? Lucien raised an eyebrow and gestured to the waiter. “Could we get a few more servings over here? I’m sure that’s better than passing food around from plate to plate,” he commented, the sarcasm clear in his voice.

Gilbert’s eye twitched. It felt like Lucien was subtly calling him out. Still, he forced a chuckle. “My bad. I didn’t think it through.”

Then, as if nothing had happened, he picked out a piece of beef from the newly served servings and placed it on Kaia’s plate. “Try this. It’s pretty good.”

Latcion gave a faint smirk. “Didn’t expect you to be so

considerate, Mr. Marsh.” But the tone of his voice shifted in the next breath. “So, how old is your kid now? In elementary school Jeza”

The question instantly wiped the smile right off Gilbert’s face,

Lacien, completely at case, added in that deliberately casual tone of his. “Or is it middle school already?”

Gilbert’s smile stiffened. “You’re joking, Mr. Graves. I’m not married.”

“Oh? Not even a girlfriend?” Lucien pressed on.

Gilbert’s jaw tensed as he fought back his irritation. “No.”

Lucien leaned back slightly. “Ituh. That’s surprising. Sorry, I figured someone your age would’ve been married by now.”

At this point, Gilbert was convinced Lucien was targeting him on purpose. And he couldn’t help but wonder if Lucien had his eye on Kaia too,

Gilbert then gave a slow, deliberate smile and countered, “What about you, Mr. Graves? You must be married too by now, right?”

The back-and-forth had Jude on edge, his nerves fraying as he searched for the right moment to intervene. “Um, so, Mr. Graves

“He was just about to step in and smooth things over when

Lucien’s soft chuckle from across the table interrupted him.

Lucien rubbed the ring on his finger and replied, “Yeah, I’m married.”

But when he caught sight of Kaia’s bare hand, his expression darkened. “What about you, Ms. Domont? Are you married?”

Kaia’s heart gave a sharp jolt.

Perfect, now the bullet is finally coming my way.
