“Dad, what was that for?” she cried out, disbelief written all over
her face.
Tobias stormed inside, his voice thick with fury. “What was
that for? Why don’t you ask yourself what kind of mess you’ve made.” He then grabbed the umbrella from the rack by the door and started swinging it at her.
He snarled, “Haven’t I told you to stay away from Kaia? What part of that do you not understand?”
“Mom, help! Dad’s gone crazy!” Kimberly scrambled around the living room, trying to shield herself, but she still took several hits.
Sally came running out, horrified. “Tobias, what are you doing? She’s a grown woman! How could you hit her like that?”
“If I don’t, she’ll never learn. All she ever does is compete with Kaia!” Tobias snapped.
Kimberly broke down, sobbing uncontrollably, “Why are you always taking her side, Dad?”
She realized that ever since her grandmother passed away, her father had changed. Not only had he kicked her and her mother out of the house, but now he was even hitting her for Kaia’s sake.

Tobias’ chest rose and fell with anger. “Is that so? Then why don’t you find yourself a wealthy husband like she did! This is your last warning, Kimberly. Push me any further, and I’ll cut you off completely!”
With that, he threw down the umbrella and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Kimberly clutched Sally tightly, sobbing, “Mom, what’s wrong with Dad? Why is he like this?”
Sally’s heart ached for her daughter, but her anger toward that cold-hearted man burned just as fiercely. “Don’t be scared, Kimberly. I’ll protect you.”
“Mom… is Dad really going to disown me?” Kimberly choked out through her tears.
Sally’s eyes darkened as she said firmly, “No, he wouldn’t dare.” She knew too many of Tobias’s secrets to let him follow through with such a threat.
But even with that confidence, she said, “Just don’t go looking for trouble with Kaia right now, okay? I’ll handle the rest.”

They might have reached the point where kissing was nothing out of the ordinary, but deep down, she still saw Lucien as someone far out of her league, even if they were officially married and bound together on paper.
Just as Kaia finished getting dressed and picked up her bag, Jason’s voice came gently from outside the door. “Good morning, Mrs. Graves. Mr. Graves is already waiting in the dining room.”
Kaia paused in her tracks, surprised that Lucien was up so early too. It was barely past seven, and she had specifically chosen this time to avoid running into him.
“Uh, okay.” Bracing herself, she made her way downstairs and spotted Lucien sitting calmly in the dining room, completely at ease. He looked up, his gaze cool as it settled on her.
“Morning,” Lucien said, his voice low and a little rough around the edges.
Kaia replied stiffly, “Morning.”
As she nibbled on her sandwich, she broke the silence to ease the awkwardness, saying, “You’re up pretty early today.”
“I wake up at seven and exercise for an hour each morning,” Lucien said. “But today I skipped my run, suspecting someone

might be deliberately avoiding me.”

When Kaia heard that not-so-subtle hint, she was completely thrown. He might as well have said her name directly.
She choked on a sip of water, coughing so hard that her face turned red.
Lucien casually slid closer, the picture of smug confidence. One hand handed her a glass of water, and the other offered a tissue with unsettling gentleness. “Careful now. Just take your time to eat. It’s still early anyway,” he said with a soft smile.
Kaia took the glass and sipped slowly. Once she had calmed down, she shot him a glare. He had some nerve saying that, as if it wasn’t his comment that made her choke in the first place.
She looked away and muttered under her breath, “I wasn’t avoiding you.”
Not wanting to sit there and force more small talk, Kaia wiped her mouth and stood up. “I’m full. I should head to work now. Take your time.” Her tone carried a hint of girlish frustration, even if she didn’t realize it herself like she was subtly blaming Lucien for teasing her earlier.
She had just reached the foyer when she was suddenly pulled into a firm, warm embrace.
