Sally set her purse down. “You cooking? What’s the occasion?”

He chuckled, “Your birthday’s next month, right? Call it an early celebration.”

She gave a tight, tired smile.

So this is supposed to replace a birthday present?

Without another word, she headed to the sink. Her face remained unreadable as she returned to the table. “Well,” she said, lifting a fork, “let’s see how it tastes.”

Tobias looked on with theatrical anticipation. “So? How is it?”

Sally gave a polite smile. “It’s good.”

Sensing the atmosphere had warmed up just enough, Tobias rubbed his hands together and began.

“You know Domley Tech’s in trouble. If we don’t get a new investor soon, we’re looking at bankruptcy, I only turned to Kaia because she married Lucien. But even after the wedding, she still refuses to let him acknowledge me as her father–in–law.”

Sally set her fork down slowly. She wasn’t the least bit surprised.

“Tobias, have you ever thought about why she’s acting this way? Ever since her mother died, she’s never accepted me. She’s always assumed I had it out for her. He leaned in, voice coaxing. “Come on, Sally. You know what’s at stake. If Domley Tech collapses, what happens to you and Kimberly? You’ll be the ones suffering. What will your family say when they hear? I don’t want you to be laughed at. I’m trying to protect you too.”

Sally sat frozen, trembling. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

She had just crossed forty, and she was already being discarded.

But what choice did she have?

“Fine,” she said at last, voice numb. “But if we’re divorcing, I want my share of your assets. Every cent that’s legally mine.”

Tobias stiffened. “Sally, we just said it’s a fake divorce—”

“I don’t care. I won’t touch Domley Tech, but if you think I’m walking away empty–handed, you’re dreaming. What if you decide not to come back? What then? Who’s going to guarantee I don’t end up with nothing?”

Tobias let out a frustrated sigh and rubbed his temples.

Kaia had no idea just how much chaos her condition had stirred.

Lucien didn’t get home from his business dinner until nearly ten. She quietly went to prepare something to ease his hangover.

“Don’t bother,” Lucien said, catching her wrist. He leaned into her neck and inhaled deeply. “Tonight, I’ll behave. I won’t touch you.”

He’d had just enough to drink to know that if he started, he wouldn’t be able to stop–and she’d be furious by morning.

“Babe, once things calm down, how about we go on a honeymoon? Just the two of us.”

Kaia smiled gently. “I’d love that. But before that, can I ask you for one little favor?”

Lucien raised an eyebrow. “What kind of favor?”

“I made a deal with my dad. If he fulfills my condition, I promised I’d let you meet with him. But if he brings up business, I need you to stall. Just go through the motions. Can you do that for me?”
