Tobias‘ temples twitched. “Kaia, that’s a serious accusation.”
“What if I’m not making it up?” she said flatly.
“Did you know about that?”
Just then, Lucien walked through the door.
He paused at the entrance when he saw Tobias there. “Tobias, you should’ve told me you were coming. I would’ve asked the chef to prepare something special.”
Tobias gave an awkward laugh. “It was a last–minute decision. I just wanted to see Kaia.”
Of course, he understood the subtext. Lucien wasn’t actually disappointed that he didn’t get to host properly.
What he meant was—Tobias should’ve called before showing up.
“Well then, Lucien, I’ll get going. I’ve got something else to take
care of.”
Lucien didn’t stop him. He simply said, “Come by when you
have time.
“And about that collaboration we discussed before… Maybe we’ll need to revisit the terms. Let my assistant know when you’ve thought it through.”

Tobias‘ smile froze.
He got the message loud and clear.

If he couldn’t figure out where he stood, Lucien would stop backing his company completely.
“Of course, of course. Kaia’s my daughter. I’ll always put her first.”
And with that, Tobias made a swift exit.
Kaia glanced at Lucien. “Are you really going to help him?”
“I could just buy out the company and give it to you,” Lucien said lightly. “Let your dad work for you. What do you think?”
But Kaia didn’t even smile. She shook her head. “No.”
Lucien’s eyes flickered. “Then what do you want?”
“I want him to watch his company go under. Completely,” she
said.
Lucien let out a warm smile. “Alright. Whatever you want.”
Kaia suddenly thought of something Alyssa said–Lucien always agreed to everything she mentioned without hesitation.

And if she didn’t say it, he wouldn’t ask. He’d just quietly do it
for her.
She tugged him over and sat him down. “Why don’t you ever ask me why?”
Lucien chuckled, “If you want to tell me, you will. If you don’t, it just means you don’t trust me enough yet.
“And if you don’t trust me, that only means I haven’t done enough for you.”
Kaia was speechless.
You manipulative jerk.
She cleared her throat. “It’s not that I don’t want to tell you. I just don’t know how.
“My mom passed away too early. The man she gave everything to didn’t deserve her. Maybe that was her mistake. I just… I don’t want you to think she was stupid. Or naive. Or weak.”
“I don’t,” Lucien said, eyes steady. “I never would.
“There’s nothing wrong with loving someone. The people who destroy that love are the ones who deserve the blame.”
Kaia suddenly missed her mom,

“Lucien, she didn’t even know I got married. Can you come with me to visit her sometime?”
Lucien leaned in and kissed her forehead. “Of course. I’m always available. You can go visit her whenever you want.”
The wedding gifts had all been locked in the safe. Kaia had been too busy these past few days to go through them.
Lucien had told her from the start–the money was hers to deal with however she pleased.
She hadn’t argued.
Most people gave regular gifts, though a few handed over bank cards.
After sorting through all the records, Kaia was shocked to see the total amount had crossed into a stunning number.
One particular card caught her attention. It was a black card with no name, only a last name written for registration–Vane.
Kaia mentally combed through the entire guest list. No one had that surname.
She flipped the card over. A password was written on the back. Later, she went to the bank and had them check the balance.

When the number popped up on screen, her breath caught.
That one card alone surpassed the combined total of every other wedding gift.
Who… gave this?
