Chapter 245 Nicholas
Kaia forced a polite smile. “He’s definitely adorable.”
“Have you picked a name yet?” she asked absently.

Joanne’s face lit up with pride. “Yes, Allen named him personally. His name is Nicholas. Allen said he hoped Nicholas would grow up to be kind, generous, and strong–willed. Luna picked the nickname–Nic.”
Kaia’s smile stiffened. “Sounds great. Joanne, shall we head downstairs? I think the housekeeper said dinner’s almost ready.”
Joanne narrowed her eyes ever so slightly, a faint trace of disdain curling on her lips.
She knew it–Kaia didn’t like the child.
Well, what did she expect? She was practically a grandmother now, and Kaia’s belly was still empty. Who knew if Kaia’d ever
have kids?
Joanne almost hoped Kaia wouldn’t. That way, the only heir to the Graves Group would be her grandson, Nicholas.
Downstairs, Allen was all smiles as he turned to Kaia. “So, did you meet Nic? He’s a strong little thing.”

That much was true–the kid did look sturdy.

Kaia gave a polite nod. “Yes, I saw him. He’s adorable. Looks a bit… like a mixed baby.”
“Mixed?” Allen didn’t react with surprise. He’d heard that before.
Even the housekeepers had whispered about it—those unusually deep–set features. But there was no foreign blood in their family.
“What mixed–race nonsense,” Joanne snapped before Allen could respond. “He looks just like us.”
She glared at Kaia like she’d just insulted the entire family lineage.
Lucien looked up lazily from his seat and spoke coolly, “Joanne, it was just a comment. No need to get so worked up. She was complimenting Alden’s kid. It’s not like she said he isn’t Alden’s
child.”
Joanne fumed silently.
Why does everything feel so off the moment they returned?
Zane shot her a warning look. “Enough. You don’t need to comment on everything.”
Then he turned to Kaia, quickly changing the subject. “So, how

was studying abroad? I heard you got pretty sick for a while- sounds like it wasn’t easy.”
Kaia followed his lead and smiled, “Yes, the weather didn’t really
agree with me. And the food was hard to adjust to. But aside from that, everything went well.”
She looked at Allen with warmth. “Still, nothing beats being home. Thank you for your support this past year. Sorry for making you worry.”
Joanne rolled her eyes inwardly.
Sucking up again, huh? Can’t go five minutes without buttering up Allen.
But Allen looked delighted. His face lit up in a way that showed he really was in good spirits.
He smiled, “Nonsense. We’re family. There’s no need for thanks. Come, let’s eat. I had the chef prepare all your favorites. Eat as much as you like, and then you and Lucien should go home and get some rest.”
He turned to Alyssa with a warm grin. “You too. Make sure you eat, okay?”
Alyssa had been eyeing the plate of spicy fried chicken when Allen gently tapped her fork away. “Eat something less spicy. You’re about to give birth.”

Landon, ever the doctor, sighed.

Actually, pregnant women could eat whatever they wanted as long as they didn’t overdo it.
“It’s fine,” Landon said. “Just a little won’t hurt. I checked with
an OB–GYN.”
With that reassurance, Alyssa finally got to taste the dish she’d been craving.
Nothing beats spicy food!
Kaia smiled. She remembered Alyssa didn’t use to like spicy food. Guess pregnancy really could change everything–even the taste buds.

After dinner, Lucien headed into the study, while Kaia took a walk in the garden with Alyssa.
“Kaia,” Alyssa whispered conspiratorially. “I know what Grandpa wanted to talk to Uncle Lucien about.”
Kaia perked up. “What?”
Alyssa scoffed, “Uncle Zane’s been planning this since before you even came back. He’s trying to convince Alden to come

home. That’s what all this is about.”

Then her voice turned even quieter. “Let me tell you something.
I don’t think Luna actually likes the baby that much. I didn’t notice it before, but now that I’m pregnant myself, I can tell. She really doesn’t care for him at all.”
Kaia’s brows pinched together. “Alyssa, why would you say that?”
Alyssa curled her lip. “Okay, hear me out. When Nic was born, Luna didn’t even look that happy. And just a short while later, she stopped breastfeeding.
“I mean, I get that—it’s a personal choice. But the part I really can’t understand? She left the baby and ran off to Africa.
“If it were me, I wouldn’t care where Landon went. I’d stay with my kid, no question. Only moms get this feeling—it’s something you can’t explain until it happens to you.
“If she really loved her child, how could she bear to leave her behind? And it’s not even like Luna calls every day. If I were the one overseas, I’d video call my baby every single day!”
Kaia listened to her rant and found herself silently agreeing.
She’d never been a mother, but she had seen those emotional short videos online–those little moments that showed just how deep and powerful a mother’s love could be.

“Maybe she just wanted to hold on to him too badly,” Kaia murmured.
But sometimes, the more tightly you try to cling to someone, the faster they slip away.

Lucien stepped out of Allen’s study and spotted Landon standing off in the distance, staring intently.
Lucien walked over and gave him a light kick. “Why are you staring at my wife?”
Landon rolled his eyes. “No one’s looking at your wife. I’m watching mine.”
Lucien smirked at his joke but switched gears real quick. “By the way, what kind of stuff do you usually eat?”
Landon gave him a suspicious look. “Why do you care what I eat? I’m straight, just so you know. I’m married. Not interested in dudes.”
Lucien gritted his teeth. “Who said anything about that?
I’m asking because you’re always going on about how you’re
definitely going to have a daughter. So I’m asking–what are you eating?”
