Wedding My Ex’s Uncle
Chapter 81 My Date
“You work at Vanguard Law Firm?”
She nodded. “Yeah, I’d just started there. Still an intern back then.”
“No wonder you said you knew me. I’d just gotten screwed over by my agency and was facing some insane breach of contract fees. I must’ve looked pretty rough when you saw me.”
Kaia just smiled, “You look great now.”
Kayla laughed softly, her eyes sparkling, “Well, compared to back then, sure.”
But she was still miles away from where she wanted to be.
“How long have you been dating Mr. Graves?”
After three years working alongside Calvin, she’d naturally encountered Lucien more than once. Sometimes, they called him Lucien, sometimes Mr. Graves, depending on the setting and their mood.
But Kayla knew that someone as low–key and powerful as Lucien rarely appeared in public with female companions. So she was curious—was this woman actually his girlfriend?
Kaia’s ears turned pink. “Um, not long.”

They weren’t even dating at all!
Kaia and Kayla chatted downstairs while the men headed to the second floor.
Calvin watched as one of the guys kept returning to look
downstairs every few steps. He clicked his tongue in amusement. “Quit staring, man. You’re not some lovesick statue waiting for your wife to come home.
“Relax, your girlfriend’s with mine. My girl’s sweet–she’ll take good care of yours.”

“This is all your fault! We’re going to be late!” Lauren Martinez snapped, clearly irritated.
If her mother hadn’t insisted she bring along some friend’s daughter, she would have been there ages ago. They’d agreed on six–thirty, but the girl didn’t show up until seven–thirty.
“I’m so sorry, Lauren. My car broke down on the way here,” Kimberly apologized breathlessly.
She was a complete wreck inside. Just thinking about tonight’s plan made her palms sweat with nerves.
The more guilty you feel, the more likely you are to screw up.

She’d meant to bring the drug in her purse, but in her panic, she’d left it at home and had to rush back to get it.
Lauren shot her a sideways glance but didn’t bother arguing. They were already late; she hoped Calvin was still around.
Lauren was also Kenneth’s student, who graduated from the same class as Calvin. She had a decent relationship with Kenneth, but she’d been crushing on Calvin for years.
Who would’ve thought Calvin would end up dating some nobody celebrity? If a random actress could catch his attention, why couldn’t she? She was a Martinez family heiress for crying out
loud.
Sure, the Martinez family wasn’t quite top–tier like the elite families, but they were leagues above bottom–feeders like the Domont family.
That was precisely why Lauren looked down on Kimberly so much.
Lauren ignored Kimberly completely when they entered the banquet hall and headed straight for Kenneth.
Kimberly felt irritated but didn’t dare offend her. She scanned the room, searching for any sign of Lucien, but came up empty.
Had Mom gotten it wrong? Maybe Lucien didn’t come after all.

Just as she was about to give up, her eyes landed on a figure in the corner. She couldn’t believe it–Kaia was here! Kaia and Kayla hit it off surprisingly well, chatting so intently that they lost track of time.
A sharp female voice cut through their conversation. “Kaia! What are you doing here!”
Didn’t Mom say this was a private event where invitations were nearly impossible? So why is Kaia here too?
Kaia looked up with obvious irritation, her brow furrowing before she relaxed again. “Kimberly, you’re hurting my ears.”
Kayla studied the woman curiously. Was she some kind of relative of Kaia’s? She asked with concern, “Everything okay?”
Kimberly shot her a sideways glare. “Sorry, but this is between me and Kaia. Mind staying out of it?”
Kayla couldn’t stand people who spoke with that passive–aggressive tone immediately.
“Look, lady, could you stop acting like some crazy person having a meltdown? This is Mr. Smith’s dinner party, not a zoo. If you want to bark like a dog, the exit is on your left. Thanks!”
Kimberly’s chest heaved with anger. “Who are you calling a dog!”
Chapter 81 My Date
She laughed mockingly, “Kaia, please tell me you’re not here trolling for rich men after your engagement with Alden fell through. Save yourself the trouble. Pretty face or not, you’re still damaged goods. This isn’t your crowd, so please leave. Now.”
Kaia watched her lose it with cold detachment. Just as she was about to respond, a familiar scent of dark wood and sandalwood filled her senses.
She found herself pulled into a firm, warm embrace.
A cold glint flashed through Lucien’s eyes. “Are you saying my date can’t be here?”
