Jason couldn’t read Naomi’s mind. Seeing her looking down, he assumed she was still stressing about her research, so he tried to cheer her up. “Naomi, you’re amazing. If this PhD is giving you trouble, just forget about it.”

“No way,” Naomi replied, her voice burning with determination. “I’m going to finish my PhD with top grades. I’m going to do better than Teresa and show everyone what I’m made of.”

Jason figured Hector must’ve gotten under her skin, but he still said seriously, “Whatever you want to do, just go for it. Me, Charles, Finn -we’ve all got your back.”

Hector was taken aback, turning to Teresa with a puzzled look.

Hector looked down at her, smiling gently. “Hello, Yolanda.”

Yolanda blinked up at him. “Mr. Reed, aren’t you gonna eat with us?”

Hector chuckled. “Nah, we’re gonna grab a bite somewhere else.”

Yolanda quickly blurted out, “But Miss Naomi still has some questions she wants to ask you.”

That caught both Teresa and Hector off guard. So Yolanda had been friendly with Hector because of Naomi. Everything made sense

Hector glanced at Teresa, who had turned her face away, obviously hurt. Yolanda was still tugging at his sleeve, waiting for an answer. Hector crouched down to her level, gently resting his hands on Yolanda’s shoulders. “Yolanda, mind if I ask you something?” Yolanda nodded, all smiles. “Ask me anything, Mr. Reed.”

Hector locked eyes with Yolanda. “Do you remember what day tomorrow is?”

Yolanda scrunched up her face, thinking hard. “Isn’t it Saturday? Doris said Saturdays are for resting.”

Hector stayed patient. “What about last year, around this time? Did you do anything special then?” He remembered Teresa posting about Yolanda making her a birthday card.

Yolanda shook her head, looking puzzled. “No, I don’t think so.”

Hector almost blurted out the birthday card thing but held back.

Teresa understood what he was trying to do, but it didn’t matter to her anymore. Yolanda’s heart had already moved on from her.

So Teresa interrupted Hector and said to Liam, “Liam, they’re waiting for you inside. Take Yolanda in.”

Then she said to Hector, “Hector, let’s go get something to eat. I’m a bit hungry.”

Hector understood and didn’t ask any further questions. He simply left with her. They went to a different restaurant, and perhaps because she was feeling down, Teresa ordered a dozen beers.

Hector wanted to comfort her, but didn’t know how to start. So, he just sat silently with her.

As the food arrived, Teresa started drinking the beer one after another. After a few drinks, she couldn’t hold back her tears. Luckily, they were in a private room, so she could let her emotions out.

But Teresa was never the type to lose control–even when she broke down, her tears were quiet and restrained.

“Hector, I’m getting a divorce,” Teresa said, her voice trembling.

“I fought so hard for this marriage, and now it’s just chains holding me down. I nearly gave my life to bring my daughter into this world, and now it feels like she’s here just to torment me.

“What did I do wrong? I loved them with everything I had–why are they treating me like this?” Teresa added.
