When She Turns Her Back (Teresa and Charles) novel Chapter 137

Chapter 137

Teresa looked up at the window, which was halfopen. The cool autumn breeze drifted in, lifting a corner of the sheer curtain.

Carried on the wind, Teresa could still catch a faint trace of Troy’s scent lingering in the air.

Did Troy come into my room before I got back?Teresa wondered to herself.

She got up and walked over to the window, glancing left and right, but Troy was nowhere to be seen. With that, she reached out and closed the window.

Just as she finished closing it, her phone rang. Teresa walked back to the bed and picked up her phone, seeing that it was Charles calling.

After a brief hesitation, Teresa answered. Hello,” she said, her voice cold and a little weak.

On the other end of the line, it was quiet for a moment before Charles spoke, his tone gentle and concerned. Did you get your wounds

taken care of?

Teresa felt a sting in her chest at his late concern, but kept her face blank as she replied, Yeah, I did.

Charles let out a breath, sounding relieved. Good.

After a moment’s thought, Teresa asked, And Yolanda? Did she get her injuries looked at?

Charles replied, Yeah, she’s already back from the hospital.

Okay,” Teresa replied. She moved to hang up right after she spoke.

But Charles, sensing what she was about to do, hurriedly called out, Teresa, wait.

She stopped, her finger hovering over the end call button, and asked, Anything else?

Charles’s voice came through, hoarse and blunt. Troy and I have some business conflicts. I don’t like you getting too close to him.His tone was domineering, as if he was bossing her around.

Teresa felt a wave of annoyance at his words. She gave a cold chuckle and said, Charles, mind your own business. With that, she hung up the phone.

Charles listened to the busy tone, his face growing grim.

Behind him, Yolanda lay in bed, blinking her big, round eyes as she watched his back. Daddy, she called out softly. Her voice was soft and a little playful.

Charles put his phone away and turned around, forcing a smile as he asked, What’s the matter?

Yolanda asked, her voice full of concern, Is Mommy okay?

Charles nodded. Yeah, she’s fine.

Yolanda asked again, her curiosity getting the better of her, Did she go back home?

Charles paused for a moment. I forgot to ask.”

Yolanda frowned, looking unhappy. Does that mean Mommy can’t come see me?

Yolanda always claimed she didn’t like her mom and didn’t want to see her, but whenever she felt sick or scared, she couldn’t help but think of her mom.

Seeing Yolanda’s gloomy face, Charles walked over and sat down by her bed. He gently tousled her hair and asked softly, Do you want Mommy to come visit you?

Yolanda buried her face in the pillow, only showing her profile to Charles as she mumbled, Maybe a little, but not that much. I have you and Miss Naomi. That’s all I need.

Charles gently rubbed Yolanda’s cheek, noticing how much she missed her momit tugged at his heart.

He didn’t say anything more,

e, just tried to comfort her and told her to get some rest.

It was late, and Yolanda soon drifted off.

Charles looked down at Yolanda’s peaceful face, his heart feeling heavy.

Once Yolanda was sound asleep, he quietly left the room. He went to his study and called Teresa again.

It took a while before she finally picked up.

Charles didn’t beat around the bush. Yolanda wants to see you.”

Teresa couldn’t help but feel a jolt of surprise at that.

But then she thought to herself, Yolanda’s always saying she hates me. Why would she want to see me now?

So Teresa replied, It’s already late. Just look after her, okay? I need some sleep.”

Before Charles could say anything else, Teresa hung up. After hanging up, she put her phone on silent.

That night, Teresa had a nightmare. She dreamed about the agony of giving birth to Yolanda.

Teresa gave birth naturally, but during labor, a blood vessel in her cervix ruptured, causing massive bleeding and a serious infection. The doctors had to give her a complete blood transfusion just to keep her alive.

That kind of pain was something only Teresa could understand. The fear back then nearly swallowed her whole. But in the end, she made it through.

But every time Teresa remembered those days, it was suffocatinglike the memory itself was choking her.

When Teresa woke up the next morning, her face was streaked with tears. She sat on her bed, gazing vacantly into space.

Teresa didn’t know how much time had passed when a knock sounded at the door. Monica called out from the hallway, Aunt Teresa, are you awake? Can I come in and see you?

Teresa snapped out of her daze at Monica’s voice. She hurriedly cleared her throat and replied, Yeah, I’m awake. Come in.

Monica pushed the door open and walked in. She was wearing pink pajamas and carrying a small stuffed animal. When she reached Teresa’s bed, she climbed up and lay down next to her.

Monica cuddled up next to Teresa, her face full of worry. Aunt Teresa Daddy and Mommy said you got bitten by a dog. Are you okay

now?

Teresa wrapped her arms around Monica and said softly, I’m fine now.

Monica looked up at Teresa, her voice sweet as honey. Daddy and Mommy told me to take care of you. They said I should take you out to cheer you up.”

Teresa gently ruffled Monica’s hair. Just having you here makes me happy.”

Monica hugged Teresa tightly and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Then she handed the stuffed animal to Teresa and said, Aunt Teresa, Betty gave me this. She said someone wanted you to have it.

Teresa lowered her head and looked at the toy in Monica’s hands. It wasn’t very big, just a simple child’s toy, but Monica said it was meant for her.

Teresa picked it up and examined it. It wasn’t a fancy brand, just a plain stuffed animal with a smiling face.

After a moment of thought, Teresa figured it must be from Troy. She couldn’t think of anyone else who would give her something like that

After putting the stuffed animal by her pillow, Teresa heard Monica chirp, Aunt Teresa, get ready. I’m taking you out to play.

Since it was Saturday and Teresa didn’t want to ruin Monica’s mood, she said yes.

Monica said she was taking Teresa out for some fun, but she actually brought her straight to the amusement park,
