Chapter 179
Teresa braced herself against the wall, her entire body feeling drained of strength, her heart beating wildly and out of control.

Yolanda’s cries poured out from the room, so raw and gut–wrenching that every sound tugged at Teresa’s nerves.
After all, Yolanda was her own flesh and blood. Hearing her cry like that made Teresa’s own heart ache just as much.
Seeing her in tears, Charles reached out to hold her again, but before his hand could even touch her, she knocked it away forcefully.
“Don’t touch me!” Teresa shot back, her eyes gleaming red with resentment and hatred as she glared up at him.
Charles watched her for a moment, then withdrew his hand in silence.
In the hospital room, Yolanda was still wailing, her cries getting more and more intense–every time she broke down like that, Teresa’s heart just felt like it was being torn apart.
Charles was no different. Even though he kept a straight face, inside, he was worried sick.
Honestly, he was scared out of his mind too.
She was his only daughter. If anything ever happened to her, he knew he’d never be able to forgive himself–not in this lifetime.
Teresa tried her best to keep her emotions in check. She didn’t want to get angry or blame Charles.
But Yolanda’s crying in the hospital room just wouldn’t let up.
In fact, it was only getting worse by the second.
Teresa finally snapped. She spun around to glare at Charles, her bloodshot eyes burning with accusation and hurt. ‘I told you, told you this would hurt Yolanda! Why couldn’t you just listen to me?‘ she practically hissed.
Teresa’s heart was overflowing with resentment, and her chest was rising and falling with” “every shaky breath.

But right now, as he faced Teresa’s furious questions, Charles found himself completely at loss for words. Teresa looked straight at him, her tears kept spilling, one after another, just like pearls sliding off a snapped necklace.
She totally lost it—couldn’t stop crying, couldn’t even get her mind together.

Charles looked genuinely worried and tried to step up for a hug, but Teresa backed off quick, throwing up her hand to block him. “Don’t come near me, Charles. I don’t want to see you.”

Charles frowned. “I know you’re blaming me, but Naomi said she’s really missing Yolanda. She’s been in the hospi gotten any real rest. I thought maybe Yolanda could keep her company, so I…”
He trailed off, his voice faltering.
Teresa didn’t wait for him to finish. Tears kept rolling down her cheeks as she let out a bitter laugh. “You’re always talking about Naomi- why not let her have a child with you? One that’s really yours, that belongs to both of you?”
Charles’s frown deepened even more. “I told you before, Yolanda is the only child I’ll ever have. But if you ever want another, it’s your choice. If you don’t, I’ll never have another kid, either.”
Teresa knew he cared so much about Naomi–worried about how hard pregnancy would be actually went through childbirth.

Chapter 179
Yolanda’s voice had gone all raspy from crying, but she just couldn’t bring herself to stop.

Listening to her daughter break down like that, Teresa couldn’t help but remember how sweet and well–behaved Yolanda used to be. Those words from the teacher echoed in her mind, and it felt like her heart was being carved out, piece by piece.
And every time she thought about what Charles had done, her hatred for him just kept building up inside.
Her eyes were rimmed red as she demanded, “Charles, Yolanda’s only five years old. Sure, maybe she doesn’t always like me, but she’s still just a little kid! What are you all trying to do to her?”
Teresa was visibly worked up, but Charles shot back, “Can you not be so dramatic? Honestly, what kid doesn’t get sick sometimes? Kids end up in the hospital–it happens. How are you so sure she caught the flu here? Couldn’t it just as easily have happened at school?”
“Seriously, Charles? Yolanda’s suffering like this and you’re still siding with Naomi?” Teresa spat.
Charles turned his face away, refusing to meet Teresa’s angry eyes. He spoke in a flat, unbothered tone. “I’m just telling it like it is. You can’t pin down exactly where Yolanda got the flu from–not just because you say so. What’s done is done, so why keep obsessing over how it happened?”
Teresa pressed a hand to her chest, feeling like someone was stabbing her right in the heart. She forced herself to take a couple of deep breaths, trying to pull herself back together.
She stared at Charles, her voice level but with a cold edge. “You’re always saying I’m not cut out to be a mom. Well then, Charles, what about you? You think you’re such a great dad?”
Charles shot her a look, brows drawn tight. “So what are you trying to say?”
LAGSNOL
Teresa gave a bitter laugh. “Nothing. Just think it over, Charles. If all you care about is having just this one kid, then maybe you should try having a conscience for once.”
Before Charles could say anything, the hospital room door opened.
The nurse came out pushing her cart, sweating buckets. She glanced at Teresa and Charles and said, “The IV’s in, drip’s started. Just stick around with your girl for now, I’ll swing by later to check her temperature.”
Teresa’s voice was hoarse as she replied, “Thank you.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Teresa pushed the hospital room door open
Charles trailed after her in silence, stepping in as well.

Yolanda was lying on her pillow, her little face blotchy from all the tears, her eyes swollen and red, looking just like little peaches. She’d stopped sobbing, but her tiny body still trembled with those shaky, hiccupping breaths.
Teresa sat down next to the bed, gently brushing Yolanda’s sweaty hair out of her face. “Feeling any better?” she asked softly.
When Yolanda heard Teresa’s voice, her eyes fluttered, and fresh tears welled up and slid down her cheeks.
But she didn’t call out, just kept quietly sobbing to herself.
Not minding Yolanda’s silence, Teresa just gently picked up her daughter’s chubby little hand to look it over.
There were two puffy, red bumps on the back of her hand from the IV sticks, and a faint trickle of blood was still oozing out from the puncture marks.
Charles saw it too as he came over, and his heart clenched tight.
Sure, finding a little kid’s vein can be tricky, but come on Yolanda was already five, it really shouldn’t have been this rough.
Just then, the nurse came back into the room, holding a temperatu
