As Yvonne spoke, she shot a deliberate glance at Teresa, who was lounging against the bedrail.

It was clear to Teresa that Yvonne had chosen her words on purpose.

Teresa caught every word, but she made sure to look like she hadn’t heard a thing, carefully sipping her soup as if nothing had happened. Teresa thought to herself, ‘She really wants me to react? Not a chance.‘
Troy watched Teresa too; he knew she’d picked up on it and was playing dumb, a hint of amusement flickering in his eyes.
But Troy didn’t push it. He just flashed Yvonne a faint smile and said, “Thanks, Yvonne, but whether I’m really the one someone can spend their life with–that’s for Teresa to judge. If she says I am, then that’s all that matters.”
Yvonne smiled back and replied, “Well, just remember–fortune always smiles on those who put in the effort.”
Troy forced a smile. “I hope so.”
When it came to winning Teresa over, he sometimes felt like he had it in the bag, and other times, it felt like an uphill battle.
Like right now-)
-Yvonne was practically steering the conversation for him, but Teresa didn’t give the slightest reaction.
But Troy didn’t mind. He figured maybe it’s because Teresa isn’t divorced yet, so she’s not even thinking about anything else right now.
He thought, ‘Once she’s single, I’ll work day and night to win her over. She’ll definitely let me into her heart.
After Teresa finished her soup, Troy took the bowl from her and started cleaning up the food containers on the bedside table.
Yvonne saw how attentive and hardworking Troy was, and she smiled to herself.
She sat down next to Teresa, took her hand, and glanced over at Troy before whispering, “I ran into Charles on my way in.”
Teresa’s eyes immediately filled with worry. “Did something happen? Was he bothering you?”
Yvonne patted Teresa’s hand, obviously concerned, and decided to be upfront. “Charles said he’s been trying to reach you, but apparently Yolanda’s been admitted to the ICU.”
Teresa bolted upright. “Oh no, I have to check on Yolanda right now!”
सम
She was a doctor, so she knew just how dangerous it was–for a little flu to land someone in the ICU? Teresa’s heart clenched.
No matter what, Yolanda was still her little girl.
Whether Yolanda lived or not–no matter what happened–Teresa had to be there for her. She couldn’t turn her back on her daughter’s life and death.
Yvonne, as a mother herself, instantly understood Teresa’s worry and offered gently, “Let me come with you.”
Teresa felt Yvonne’s support and concern; she gave a grateful nod. “Alright.”
Troy, busy tidying up, caught all of their conversation.
Seeing that both Teresa and Yvonne were heading out to see Yolanda, Troy jumped in eagerly, “I’ll go along too.”
Teresa’s the only one he’s worried about.
If Teresa were healthy, he wouldn’t have gone with her.
But right now, she still had a fever. There was no way he’d let her go by herself.
Teresa hesitated for a moment, but she ultimately decided against it.
Troy saw she was firm and didn’t push it.
He told himself, ‘Doesn’t matter if she says no–I’m still going to follow her, even if it has to be in secret.
Yvonne supported Teresa as they made their way to the pediatric ward together.

When they arrived, Teresa spotted Charles and Sharon sitting together on a bench down the hall, both silent–neither saying a word, just sitting there in heavy silence.
At the sound of approaching footsteps, Charles looked up. When he saw how exhausted Teresa was, his brow drew together in concern.
The questions he’d been meaning to ask her never made it past his lips.
Now that Yolanda was out of danger, Charles figured there was no sense in dragging things out. He didn’t have the energy for more arguments right now.
When Charles kept silent, Teresa had to break the silence. “How is Yolanda doing?”
Charles replied in a flat, begrudging voice, “She’s in the ICU.
The vagueness of his answer irked Teresa, and her tone sharpened. “I asked about how Yolanda is, not just where she’s at.”
Hearing Teresa get upset, Charles finally snapped, “You’ve got time to question me now, but when I messaged you, why didn’t you come to look after her?”
Teresa gave a bitter, self–mocking chuckle. “Are you really sure Yolanda wants me caring for her? Does she even want me around? Let’s be honest, the ones she needs are you and Naomi. Think she’d be happy if I just hung around taking care of her?”
Instead of answering, Charles‘ eyes rimmed red as he muttered, “But no matter what, you’re still her mom.
That word-“mom“-felt more like shackles locking Teresa in place.
Teresa was shaking, barely able to keep standing, but Yvonne gripped her tightly, scared she’d collapse at any second.
Staring into Charles’s cold, red eyes, Teresa took a long, shaky breath. “Charles, I’m one person. I’m not a spinning top–I can’t just revolve around Yolanda nonstop.”
She was so exhausted that her voice turned hoarse and raspy, barely able to speak.
Charles lifted his face to look at Teresa, struggling to keep his emotions in check. “So you can just ignore your daughter’s life or death? You–look at the messages I…” he started, his words trailing off.
But before he could finish, Teresa snapped. Her voice exploded, completely overpowering his. “And who’s ever cared about whether I lived or died?”
Her outburst made the veins stand out sharply on her neck and face, her eyes instantly shot through with blood–red streaks.
Right after she yelled, her throat flared up with a fierce itch and pain, and she couldn’t stop coughing–until a small pool of blood appeared in her palm.
Yvonne quickly handed Teresa a tissue and gently patted her back. “Teresa, don’t get yourself too worked up. Even if others don’t care about your wellbeing, you have to look out for yourself.”
Sharon was taken aback, instinctively getting up to help Teresa, but Yvonne turned to Charles, her voice full of bitter frustration. “Teresa’s been burning up with a fever since last night. She only found out Yolanda was in the ICU after I ran into you. The moment she heard, she insisted on coming over. She nearly collapsed several times on the way, but she still made it. If you say Teresa doesn’t care about her daughter, I’d never believe it. If she didn’t care, she wouldn’t have risked her health to come here.”
After saying that, Yvonne looked at Teresa again. “Teresa, let’s go. I’ll take you back.”
Teresa was completely spent. She didn’t want to stay any longer, so she nodded in agreement.
As Yvonne supported Teresa out, she turned to glance at Charles and continued, “Charles, you should think carefully about all this.”
