Troy noticed Teresa’s mood had taken a nosedive. He shot Zane a look, silently urging him to go comfort her.
>
Zane caught on immediately. He walked over to Teresa and wrapped his arms around her.
“Teresa, let’s make lunch,” he suggested gently..
Teresa looked up at Zane, her eyes full of apology. “Zane, let me say sorry for Yolanda, okay?”
Zane shook his head. “It’s okay, Teresa. I’m used to it. It’s not the first time someone’s called me that. I never had a mom, anyway.” Teresa’s heart ached at his words. She pulled him into a tight hug, stroking the back of his head. “Zane, you’re a good boy. Don’t let wh other people say bother you. Even if you don’t have a mom, your dad loves you so much.”
Zane touched Teresa’s cheek, smiling. “Yeah, Dad loves me, and so do Mr. Hamilton and Uncle Leo. And maybe you’ll love me too someday.
Teresa smiled at him. “That’s right. More and more people will love you.”
Zane took her hand. “Then let’s make lunch. I’m starving.”
Teresa managed to set aside her worries about Yolanda for now and joined in the kitchen. She chopped the vegetables, Troy took charg at the stove, while Monica and Zane tossed ingredients into the pot.
Working together, they had two dishes ready in no time.
Teresa hadn’t expected Troy to be so handy in the kitchen, but with her mood still heavy, she kept her thoughts to herself and didn’t as
Once the food was ready, Teresa turned to Troy and said, “Mr. Hamilton, would you stay and have lunch with Monica and Zane?”
Troy frowned. “What about you? Where are you off to?”
Teresa managed a small smile. “I’m just going to the bathroom.”
Troy watched her with concern, fully aware that she was still hurting over Yolanda, but he didn’t say anything about it.
He chose not to confront her.
After washing her hands, Teresa told the kids she’d just pop to the bathroom and be right back.
As she left, Troy watched her go and noticed she was walking in a different direction than the bathroom.
He took off his apron and said to Zane, “Zane, you and Monica bring the dishes.to Emilie Winslow. I’ll go see where your aunt went.”
“Okay, Mr. Hamilton,” Zane called out.
Troy washed his hands and followed after Teresa.
She wasn’t walking fast, so Troy quickly closed the distance between them.
Teresa was sitting alone on a park bench, her head bowed, her tears falling fast and silent.
Even though pain was written all over her face, she but her lip hard, desperately trying to keep her sulas inside.

Teresa lifted her tear–stained face, every bit of her expression screaming helplessness and sorrow. She stared at Troy, looking completely lost, but the tears kept streaming down, one after another.
Troy’s heart twisted seeing her like this. He slid down beside her and fished out a clean handkerchief from his pocket, giving it to her. “Go ahead and wipe those tears.”
With her voice hoarse from crying, Teresa took the handkerchief and murmured, “Thank you.”
Troy kept his eyes on the horizon, tone flat and almost detached. “Hurts inside, doesn’t it?”
Teresa kept wiping at her cheeks but answered stubbornly, “Nope.”
Troy still didn’t look her way. She probably doesn’t want anyone seeing her like this, he thought, keeping his eyes averted.
Hearing her stubborn reply, Troy snorted, his voice cold. “Finally, you get to know how it feels.”
Teresa didn’t respond.
She knew Troy was about to start running his mouth again. She had no idea what he was on about, so she just let it slide.
Finally, Troy turned to face her. He didn’t press for answers, just said gently, “If you’re feeling this sad, just use my shoulder for a while. That’s what it’s here for
Teresa tried to refuse, but the words were stuck in her throat, and her tears only came faster.
Unable to hold back anymore, she turned and clung to Troy, burying her face in his shoulder as sobs wracked her body.
Through her tears, she choked out, “Yolanda used to be so different, truly. She won’t listen to me now. I can’t reach her, I…”
Troy could feel her trembling in his arms. He gently pulled her closer, his voice soothing. “I know, I really do.”
Teresa cried for a long time, pouring out memories about how Yolanda used to be such a good kid.
Troy just sat beside her and listened, keeping quiet the whole time.
After almost twenty minutes, Teresa finally raised her head from his shoulder.
She felt so much lighter inside, and her tears had finally dried up.
She turned to Troy and murmured, “Thank you.”
Troy looked at her, his face grave. “If you truly want to help Yolanda turn things around, you really should bring up what happened today with Charles, He needs to know.”
Teresa nodded quietly. “Yeah, I know.”
Troy’s gaze lingered on her. “If I were her dad, I’d never let you shoulder all this pain alone.”
Teresa managed a small smile. “Let’s go back.”
“Yeah Troy replied.
They started heading back the way they come, but just as they got close to where Monica and Zane were, Yolanda’s walce drifted over from the woods nearby “Miss Naomi, I don’t have a mon anymore. Can you be my man now?”
