Once he’d pulled himself together, he tried to step around Wendy and head toward the ward. I’m going to check on her,” he said.

But Wendy blocked his way, her tone almost pleading. Theodore, Teresa hasn’t slept in two days. She just finally managed to get some rest. Please, don’t wake her up. If she does, she’ll end up staying up the whole night again.

Hearing this, Theodore stopped in his tracks.

He wanted to see his sister, but he couldn’t help feeling sorry for her.

Even though Wendy’s excuse didn’t really make sense, Theodore couldn’t take the risk. Butwhat if she’s right?he thought, anxiety gnawing inside him.

If his carelessness ended up waking his sister after she’d finally gotten some rest, he’d never forgive himself.

Noticing Theodore’s hesitation, Wendy quickly spoke up again. The doctor said Teresa really needs lots of sleep to help her recover.

Theodore bowed his head, replying in a muffled voice, Yeah, let her sleep.”

Yvonne, still worried, blurted out, I’ll just peek in on Teresa, just for a second.

With that, she started walking toward the ward.

But after just one step, Theodore grabbed her arm.

Yvonne turned back and saw Theodore shaking his head at her.

She got the message right away.

She didn’t insist any further. Instead, she turned to Wendy and said softly, I’ll come by tomorrow and bring Teresa something to eat. Theodore and I should go home now. If Teresa wakes up, please tell her: her brother and I are both really worried. No matter what happens, our whole family has her backand she’s never alone.”

Wendy’s eyes reddened as she nodded. Okay, she managed.

Only after Yvonne and Theodore had left the maternity ward did Wendy return to Teresa’s room.

Teresa lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, her eyes glistening with unshed tears she tried so hard not to let fall.

She’d overheard every word her brother and Yvonne said outside.

She was hurting so much insidethere was just so much sadness, she could barely breathe.

Wendy came over and sat next to her, gently dabbing away Teresa’s tears with a tissue. Teresa, you heard all that, didn’t you?she asked softly.

Teresa nodded. Yeah,she whispered.

Wendy’s voice trembled with concern. Looks like we can’t hide it anymore.

Teresa hesitated, then said, Just tell Yvonne I went back to Joyacre Villa when she drops by tomorrow.

Wendy wrinkled her brow. You really don’t want to tell them?

Teresa clenched her lips, her voice low. Theodore’s got a short fuse. If he finds out I was bullied, he’ll go ballistic.

Wendy let out a helpless sigh, nodding. Alright, I’ll try my best tomorrow.

After their talk, Wendy quietly fetched warm water and a towel, then sat down by Teresa’s side and softly wiped her down, making sure every movement was gentle.

With her body freshly cleaned. Teresa felt the ache in her body case just a little, a small comfort in the midst of everything.

About half an hour later, Teresa was half asleep when the sound of someone pushing open the ward door made her instantly tense.

These past two days, every little noise at the door would send Teresa bolting awakeher nerves wound tight, ready for anything.

Who’s there?Teresa called out, her voice full of guarded vigilance.

Her wariness was obvious in every syllable, as if she expected trouble at any moment.

The room was pitch dark, and even with the faint moonlight seeping through the window, Teresa squinted but just couldn’t make out

who it was.

The figure didn’t utter a word, simply moved closer to the bed, step by step, enveloped in silence.

Feeling someone approaching, Teresa instinctively shrank back toward the corner of the bed.

But just then, a pair of warm, strong hands gripped her armcold from fear.

In the darkness, she heard a warm, husky voice say, It’s me.

Teresa recognized the voiceit was Troy.

Meanwhile, Wendy, who had been dozing on the couch, opened her eyes. Seeing that it was Troy, she asked, Teresa, do you want me to step out?

Teresa immediately panicked at the thought of Wendy leaving. She blurted out, her voice tight with anxiety, No, don’t go.

Troy sat down on the edge of the bed, unwilling to let go of Teresa’s hand. When he glanced down, all he could see was a hazehe couldn’t make out her expression in the darkness.

The room was too dim for him to see anything clearly, but he could vaguely make out the outline of Teresa lying there.

He’d told himself he wouldn’t come, but after getting home, he couldn’t sleepTeresa kept running through his mind.

So in the end, he didn’t fight his feelings anymore and just came straight over.

He leaned down, intense eyes locked onto the vague outline of Teresa’s faceeven though he couldn’t really make her out in the darkness, the force of his presence was unmistakable. His voice was low, almost rough: Are you sure about that?

Feeling Troy’s overwhelming presence in the room, Wendy quickly spoke up to ease the tension. Teresa, why don’t you talk with Mr. Hamilton for a bit? I’ll step out and be back in a while.

With that, Wendy quietly slipped out, gently closing the door behind hergiving them a bit of privacy.

Once Wendy was gone, a heavy silence settled over the room.

After what felt like an eternity, Troy finally broke the quiet, his voice low and tense. Are you pregnant?

Teresa struggled, trying to pull her hand back, but Troy only gripped her tighter, refusing to let go.

She couldn’t really make put Troy’s face in the shadowsjust the outline of his jaw. Her tone chilled as she said, Troy, I don’t owe you

an answer.

Troy’s temper flared. He squeezed her hand even harder, leaning in and demanding, Just tell me. Is it true?

As he leaned in, Troy’s weight pressed down on her, making it hard for Teresa to breathe and, even worse, he accidentally pressed right against her wounds,

Teresa couldn’t stop herself from letting out a strained gasp of pain.

She sounded like it hurt like hell, but she was forcing herself to hold it back, desperately trying not to show her weakness.

Troy instantly realized something was wrong. He let go of her hand in a rush, his voice filled with worry. What’s wrong?

Teresa just bit her lip and didn’t answer,

Troy, still worried, reached over and flicked on the light.
