Charles gently cleaned the blood and dirt from Naomi’s hand with his sleeve, then blew softly

the scrape.
Naomi’s brow was furrowed, tears welling in her eyes. She looked so fragile and pitiful that Charles’s heart melted.
“Does it still hurt?” he asked softly, his voice full of concern.
Naomi bit her lip and shook her head. “Charles, I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt that much.”
“Let me help you back inside,” Charles said, steadying her. “I’ll clean it up with some antiseptic.”
A tear finally rolled down her cheek. “Charles, I’m useless. I can’t help Jason.”
Charles gently wiped the tear away. “It’s not your fault. You did everything you could.”

“But I’m a doctor, too,” Naomi said, her voice thick with self–blame. “I went to the same university as Hector, but I don’t have the skill to do this surgery. If I did, I wouldn’t have to beg anyone. Charles, I feel so incompetent.”
Charles stroked the top of her head, his tone soothing. “You’re already amazing. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Jason wouldn’t want you to feel this way.”
With red–rimmed eyes, Naomi lowered her gaze guiltily, “Okay.”
As Charles started to help Naomi toward the main hall, he found Teresa standing nearby. She hadn’t left, just stood there silently, watching them.
Before heading inside, Charles turned to shoot a look at Teresa, his eyes dark with unconcealed anger.
‘He’s furious, she thought,
But Teresa didn’t flinch, meeting his gaze head–on.
They stared at each other without a word, but in that silent exchange, Teresa understood him perfectly.
He was telling her she had gone too far.
‘Had I really gone too far?”
Was it her fault? Naomi had blocked her path, causing the fall. Why was he blaming her instead of Naomi?
A bitter smile touched Teresa’s lips as she finally looked away.
Just as she was about to leave, she heard Charles ask Naomi, “Can you walk?”
Before the dazed Naomi could even answer, Charles bent down and swept her up into his arms.
As he adjusted his grip, his hand pressed against her scraped one. Naomi flinched in his arms, murmuring, “Charles, you’re hurting me.” “Sorry, I’ll be more careful”
As he spoke, he lowered his head. From where Teresa stood, it looked like he kissed Naomi’s forehead.
Teresa let out a cold, humorless laugh, turned on her heel, and walked away.
As Charles carried Naomi inside, Yolanda ran over. “Daddy, what happened to Miss Naomi?”
Whatever Charles said in response was lost to Teresa as she walked away.
Qutside Joyacre Villa, a white Porsche pulled up, and a young woman in a flowing white dress stepped out.
Teresa looked up and recognized Serena
Andrew was still in the passenger seat, but after a few seconds, he reluctantly got out of the car.
Serena and Andrew rarely visited Joyacre Villa after she and Charles got married. When they did, it was usually just to see Yolanda, maybe two or three times a year.

In the past. Teresa would have greeted them with a warm smile, ready to cook all their favorite dishes–stews, roasts, whatever they liked. She never minded the effort.
But tonight, seeing them here, her face was devoid of any warmth, let alone the enthusiastic welcome she used to give.
Knowing they weren’t here for her, Teresa tried to walk past them, but Serena caught her arm. “Teresa, I need to talk to you.”
Teresa froze, her eyes red as she looked at Serena. “So you’re here to beg me, too?”
Not everyone in the Logan family was terrible. Richard and Serena, at least, were decent.
Richard had always treated her well, and while Serena wasn’t exactly close to her, she had never been overtly hostile.
Serena’s heart ached seeing the raw hurt in Teresa’s eyes. After a moment’s hesitation, she said helplessly, “Teresa, Jason’s mother is still so young. I went to see Hector, and he said he won’t do the surgery unless you give the word, so…
Teresa had heard enough. She pulled her arm free. “Telling me is useless. Go talk to Jason.”

Without another word, she turned to leave. Andrew didn’t try to stop her, but he angrily turned on Serena. “I told you She’s a leech. Why are you groveling to her?”
Teresa heard Andrew’s bitter complaint but didn’t care. She got into her car and drove off.
it was pointless.
Watching Teresa’s car disappear, Serena glared at Andrew. “I told you to hold your tongue. She’s our sister–in–law. Can’t you show her a little respect?”
Andrew scoffed. “Some sister–in–law. The only one I recognize is Naomi.”

Serena slapped his arm. “She is Yolanda’s mother, and that makes her our sister–in–law. Naomi is just some woman our brother is with. Don’t you ever say that again. If I hear it one more time, you’ll have to answer to me.”
Andrew rolled his eyes. “You stick up for her, but does she even appreciate it?”
Serena sighed. “But what Jason did wasn’t right. Hector is a man of integrity. He would never make those kinds of basic mistakes.” “You’re not Hector,” Andrew retorted. “How would you know?”
Serena was left speechless and dropped the subject.

The next day, Teresa brought lunch to the hospital to visit Hector after her shift.
