Teresa raised her voice at Charles, who remained cool and unfazed. “If I’d known my daughter would turn out like this, I would’ve choked her to death myself rather than ever let her grow up.”

Charles frowned, his tone icy. “That’s enough. She’s still just a kid.”

Watching Charles shield Yolanda like that, Teresa gave a mocking laugh. “You’ll regret this one day.”

Charles barely even blinked. “No, Teresa. You’re the one who’ll regret it.”

With that, Charles swept Yolanda up into his arms in one swift motion.

Teresa stood frozen in place, pain washing over her until she lost her balance and collapsed to the floor.

Yolanda, clinging to Charles’s shoulder, witnessed the whole scene of Teresa falling to the ground.

Charles heard the sound and instinctively started to turn, but Yolanda suddenly spoke up, “Daddy, can I have some tanghulu later?”

Charles steadied his daughter in his arms, his tone gentle. “Sure, I’ll get you some.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Teresa watched as Charles and Yolanda walked out of the hospital room, her heart shattering completely.

Back then, these two meant everything to her.

But in the end, it was them who ended up hurting her the most.

Teresa lay on the cold floor and thought to herself, ‘Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if I just died right here.’

She fell into an endless dream, where Charles and Yolanda kept searching for her.

Charles said, “I was wrong. Just forgive me this once. From now on, my heart belongs only to you.”

Yolanda pleaded, “Mommy, I know I was wrong. I’ll do whatever you say from now on, I swear I’ll listen to you, no matter what.”

But in the end, Teresa fought her way back to consciousness.

All she saw was the white ceiling above her and the steady beeping of medical equipment.

Then, a figure loomed over her.

Teresa turned her head and saw Troy.

He was looking at her with concern, his voice hoarse as he asked, “You’re awake?”

Teresa was a bit dazed. “How did I get here?”

Troy smiled at her. “I carried you.”

Teresa frowned, her words laced with annoyance. “Who asked you to carry me? What if you ended up getting hurt again, huh?”

As soon as the words slipped out, Teresa instantly regretted it–she couldn’t believe she’d just blurted that out.

“What was I thinking, saying something so easy to misinterpret? Teresa couldn’t help berating herself.

But Troy grinned at her, pure mischief in his eyes. “So, you’re worried about me, huh?”

Teresa turned her gaze to the window, deliberately changing the subject. “I need to go home.”

Troy’s grin grew wider. “From now on, wherever I am, that’s your home.”

Teresa’s face went beet red, and right at that moment, a quiet cough suddenly broke the silence in the hospital room

The unexpected sound gave her a real joht.

She spun around and realized it was Rose Hamilton

Rose greeted Teresa with a cheerful little wave and a big smile. Hi there—I’m Toy’s mother

Teresa swallowed her nerves and managed a greeting, “Hello, Mrs. Hamilton.”

Rose looked Teresa up and down, nodding in approval. “You’re such a beauty. Absolutely stunning.”

Teresa wasn’t used to getting compliments like that–especially not when someone was so unabashedly generous with their praise like

Rose.

‘Honestly, what girl wouldn’t be happy to hear something like that?‘ Teresa thought to herself.

Teresa suddenly felt like she needed to make a run for it–if she stuck around any longer, Rose actually might start sending money right then and there.

Troy didn’t say a word, just followed Teresa out of the room in silence.

When they got to the hospital entrance, Teresa stopped and turned to Troy. “Why don’t you go hang out for a bit before you go back?”

Troy got what she was trying to say, but he just shook his head. “I can’t really relax when you’re by yourself. Let me take you home.”

Teresa looked pale but kept insisting. I’m okay, really.”

Troy’s face grew serious. “I just talked to the doctor He said you’re bleeding again.”

Teresa hesitated for a moment before replying. “Seriously. In fine don’t worry about me.

Troy’s anxiety grew even stronger. He leaned in, gently grasped Teresa’s hand, his sharp eyes gazing deep into hers. “Just tell me honestly–is someone bullying you again?”

Teresa shook her head, bitterness lacing her words. “No. No one’s hurting me.”

Seeing how her eyes were red and watery, Troy grabbed Teresa’s shoulders, his voice sharp and urgent. “Teresa, tell me the truth.”

He spoke while shaking her, almost rough with desperation.

Teresa’s head spun from the force, her stomach churning. ‘Damn, he’s shaking me so hard I might puke… she thought.

Just as she was finally beginning to steady herself, Troy looked like he was ready to start shaking her all over again.

But Teresa gave in, surrendering. “Okay, okay, I’ll tell you!”

Troy finally let go of Teresa’s shoulders, their eyes meeting in tense, silent understanding.

Teresa lowered her gaze, her voice soft and strained. “It was Yolanda. She kicked me.”

Troy fell silent, his face clouding over.

After a long moment, he let out a heavy sigh. “Anybody else, I’d step in without hesitation–but she’s your daughter. What can I do? My

hands are tied.”
