Chapter 23

At that very moment, Derrick turned back and looked provocatively at Nathaniel, slowly mouthing a few words: “You are not as good as me.”

Almost instantly, Nathaniel’s face darkened like ink, and he slammed his fist heavily onto the table covered in shattered glass.

“Genevieve! You really are something!”

He gritted his teeth, forcing the words out from deep within his throat.

The discomfort caused by excessive blood loss made his vision flicker and darken.

Nathaniel bit his lip hard, barely keeping himself conscious, and forced himself to go to the hospital for treatment.

Soon after, Genevieve hurried into his hospital room, anxiously asking, “Nate, are you alright? It’s all my fault. The situation was urgent, so I just grabbed whoever was closest to me, hoping you would get hurt less. I didn’t mean to save Derrick first, please don’t misunderstand.”

“You two are so silly, always thinking about saving me. I’m not sick, I don’t need a kidney transplant, a little injury is nothing. But you two, if either of you gets hurt, I would be terribly worried.”

Nathaniel gave a self–deprecating tug at his lips, “Is that so, Genny? Is that really what you think?”

“Of course.”

After hearing her answer, he couldn’t feel even a trace of happiness in his heart.

After a long silence, he asked a question that Genevieve had once asked before:

“Genny, once Derrick and I recover, can we proceed with the kidney transplant as soon as possible? We owe Derrick, so we can compensate him with more money, as much as he wants.”

“…” Genevieve pressed her lips tightly together, remaining silent.

After a moment, she finally spoke slowly, “I’m sorry, Nate. Derrick isn’t ready to donate his kidney yet. Can you give him a little more time?”

“Your health is still pretty good right now, so there’s no rush for the transplant. Waiting a few more days won’t make a difference.”

“Is that so? Do you really think waiting a few days doesn’t matter?” Nathaniel felt unbearably bitter, his throat dry.

When he saw Genevieve nod, it felt as if his heart had been mercilessly crushed, leaving him in utter agony.

Nathaniel took several deep breaths before he could barely control his emotions, but his voice still trembled uncontrollably.

Watching her back as she left, Nathaniel’s heart sank completely to the bottom.
