The blindfold came off about thirty minutes later when we were on a busy road. There was no way to tell where we came from.

It felt like a mirage when the car finally rolled to a stop in front of my apartment building. Home. I could cry.

Veronica would be inside probably pacing like a maniac. I hadn’t been allowed to check my phone even once, so I hadn’t been able to reach out to any of them. Or even the police.

“Can I get my bag now?” I asked cautiously, careful not to spark whatever fire was already brewing inside him.

He didn’t answer immediately, but I could feel his gaze shift toward me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him lean in. My entire body tensed like a loaded spring. But instead of grabbing me or pulling something insane, he reached behind the seat and dropped the bag on my lap.

I reached for the door handle.

“I hope you do understand now, Rali-” his hand landed on my bare thigh, halting me mid–motion.“—What will happen if you disobey me; if you let anyone touch you. Before now, I resisted the urge to hurt you whenever you entertained other men. But not anymore. Now, you’ve met me and know better than to smile at any asshole.”

The only asshole here is you. I wish I could tell him that. But I sealed the words behind clenched teeth.

His head tilted slightly, and a smug smile curled at the corners of his mouth. “Will you be a good girl, Rali?”

The way he asked it–soft, coaxing and almost sweet–felt like blasphemy. It was the same way you’d talk to a pet. His voice had no business sounding like that, not after everything he’d done.

“Yes,” I gritted out.

But instead of releasing me, he tightened his grip on my thigh, his fingers digging into my skin.

“I said yes!” I yelled at him. The corners of my eyes burned. If I stayed a minute longer in this car, I was definitely going to cry.

He didn’t release me yet. He kept his strong grip on me, staring right into my eyes and letting me see he was the one in charge.

If this wasn’t bullying, I didn’t know what else to call it,

Satisfied, he let me go.

I grabbed the door handle and yanked it open with force, glaring hard at him before huffing and stepping out. I didn’t bother slamming the door, but I wanted to. Badly.

My chest swelled with bitter pride when the tears didn’t fall, at least not until I reached the house…

I scanned my fingerprint and made my way into the house where Veronica and Ruby were seated with their phones. The moment they saw me, they sprang to their feet like lightning had struck.

“My God!” Veronica gasped, eyes wide. “Don’t tell me he ripped your clothes off, you had to return in pajamas!” She laughed.

“Seriously, Rali? We get that the night might have been pretty awesome, but you got us so worried! We’ve been making countless calls trying to get in touch with anyone that might know Adam,” Ruby was both worried and relieved.

“Now, you have a lot to tell us! How did it go?”

“Was he rough? Did you enjoy it?”

I was still standing by the door, feeling like a ghost of myself. Finally, the stupid tears I’d been so proud of keeping came rolling down my cheeks.

“What was his reaction when he learned you were a–Oh my God! Are you crying!?” Veronica shrieked.

They rushed toward me and their faces paled when they got a proper look at me. The bandage behind my thigh, my swollen

“What the hell happened to you?” Ruby shrieked.

“Did that son of a bitch hurt you? What in God’s name!?”

The cap flew off the bottle holding my emotions as I burst into tears, crying in their arms.

For the next hour, I narrated everything to Veronica and Ruby. As expected, they exploded into rage, promising to chop off his balls and make him pay for everything he did to me.

Ruby put a call through to one of her contacts in the police–thanks to her father’s connections–and reported the Adam incident to them. The officer promised to check out the scene and get back to us, and for the past thirty five minutes, we’ve been waiting.

“This guy must really have a death wish,” Ruby muttered, pacing the dining while I sat, staring at my second glass of water.

Veronica was sitting next to me, holding my hand.

“I should’ve followed my instincts and know something was wrong when we couldn’t reach you last night,” Veronica’s voice was thick with guilt. “I was actually very worried! But, Ruby assured me that I was only being paranoid.”

“Well, who checks their phones when they’re having sex, Ver?” Ruby countered. “When she wasn’t picking up, I figured she was having a good time with Adam and didn’t want us to be a pain in the ass,”

“But. you should know it was unlike Rali to not get back to us. Even if she was…you know… she’d still shoot a quick text. Thirty seconds is all it takes.”

“It’s okay,” I cut in. “This isn’t the time to pass blame around. Really, it’s nobody’s fault. Not even I could’ve imagined that asshole would do a thing like this.”

Veronica was about saying something before Ruby’s phone rang.

“It’s Meredith,” she whispered before answering the call.

Meredith was the police contact Ruby had reported the incident to.

She put the call on speaker and what she said next made our faces drain of color.

“B–But that isn’t possible,” Ruby scoffed. “She was there, Ms. Connors. She saw everything with her own eyes.”

“I’m not disputing her statement, and I’m grateful for this too, Ruby. My men and I will keep working, and sure, I’ll let you know how it goes.”

My heart felt like it had detached from my chest, floating somewhere far above me.

According to Meredith, there was no sign of Adam and his men when they reached the house. They couldn’t even find a drop of blood or any indication that something violent had taken place.

No. This was insane. Everything was insane.
