Chapter 42
I spun around like I’d been shocked, heart slamming straight into my throat.
There was someone in the room now.
Someone who wasn’t staff.
Leather pants. Zipped puffer jacket. Gloved hands.

Something thick and sick dropped into the very pit of my stomach. It crawled its way up my chest, clogged my throat, and exploded from my lips in a blood–curdling scream.
I stumbled up, nearly toppling the table. My eyes were so wide, they could’ve swallowed the room and still begged for more.
My phone crashed to the floor, but I didn’t care. Not when I was staring at my nemesis right in the face.
It was him. My stalker. The very one I was here to get rid of.
But how… How did he know about the Cafe? How was he here? Surely, he couldn’t have defeated The Torturer so easily, could he?
“What’re you…” I swallowed hard, my throat tightening. “What’re you doing here?”
I looked around. Surely, the staff should be around somewhere. They could help me.
He tilted his head to the side, a disapproving look crossing his face. “You asked for me. Don’t you think it’s impolite to question the guest you personally invited, Zerali?”
It took a full second too long for his words to click, and when they did, it felt like being hit by a truck with no brakes.
No. No way.
My heart skipped a beat. Or maybe it quit entirely. And my frozen legs managed a single, pathetic shuffle backward.
“You wanted to talk.” He took a step towards me. “According to your email, you had a lot to talk about the man that’s been stalking you. Go ahead and start talking, Rali, ‘cause that’s the reason I’m here.”
My head jerked side to side before I even realized I was shaking it. Suddenly, it was like the universe had been holding back laughter until now when it finally burst out in my face.
I stared at him again–tried to really see him. “Who are… Who are you?”
Frightened tears clung to my lashes as every corner of my soul begged for this to be a nightmare.
He stepped forward. I stumbled two steps back, and he erased the distance with two more of his own.
“Who do you think?” He cocked his head. “You emailed me, Rali. Told me you needed help getting rid of someone. Surely you’re not that stupid. You must know who you invited.”
My world shattered so violently, I swore I could hear the sound of my soul breaking.
What!? He was Void? The Torturer?
“It’s not possible,” I muttered in denial, still shaking my head. “You can’t…you can’t be.”

How unlucky could I be that one of the most dangerous men in the world was tny stalker? That the one man I’d trusted to save me was the same man I was running from? The one who’d been breaking me piece by piece all along?
What were the odds of one person being so unfortunate?
But then, it’d make so much sense. It’d explain why he was always confident and could get away with the things he did.
It’d explain why he agreed to meet me so easily within twenty–four hours.
It’d explain why he was right here with me, in this very room when I was supposed to be meeting with the Torturer!
No one would dare mess with the Torturer like this. No one but the Torturer himself.
This whole time, he was Void. The one they called the King of the Underworld.
Oh, God.
“I told you not to get anyone else involved.” His voice dropped a degree colder.
God, he seemed angry now.
“You better run, Rali. Because things are about to get a lot worse for you.”
I didn’t hesitate. Turning around, I bolted for the glass door, my heart roaring in my ears.
He was going to kill me. He was going to kill me. That was all I could think about.
Relief slammed into me when I reached the door, but it vanished just as fast when I pulled the knob and realized it wouldn’t budge. It was locked.
No. No, no, no. This couldn’t be happening.
“Help!” I screamed, banging on the door with both fists.
Just outside, I could see the rush of traffic and people moving, unaware. But they couldn’t see nor hear me.
I didn’t let that stop me as I continued screaming and hitting the door.
“Please! Help! Help me!”
Strong hands suddenly wrapped around my middle, jerking me away from the door. I screamed and twisted, but it was useless. He spun me and slammed me hard against the wood, knocking the breath right out of my lungs.
His face hovered inches from mine, rage carved into every line of it.
Void.
God, he looked murderous.
No- No. No. I didn’t want to be around him right now. Not now.
“Please…” Tears coursed down my cheeks. His body crushed the space around me, leaving me no room to escape or even breathe.
I didn’t exactly know why I was crying. Maybe because I’d just discovered I’d been dealing with the infamous Torturer this whole time. The man who craved blood. The one who had brought the mightiest men to their knees.

How foolish was I to think I could ever escape him? Void was obsessed with me. Only now did it dawn on me how truly fucked I was.
His right hand shot out, clamping around my throat in a painful hold. My eyes widened as air fled my lungs.
“Were you seriously going to try to kill me, Rali?” His voice–God, his voice–was ice and ash. “If Void had been someone else, would you have gone through with it? Would you have gone to such lengths to free yourself from me?”
My fingers clawed at his wrist, but it was like trying to move iron. He was truly going to kill me at this point.
Tears leaked out of my eyes, my mouth opening uselessly, gasping.

He finally released my throat but only to yank my hair, pulling too hard. I choked for air while trying to deal with the pain from my scalp.
“You should’ve listened to me, Green,” he snarled.. “Because now, I’m going to do exactly what I promised. I’m going to hurt you real bad, and you’re not going to like it.”
