Ruby’s eyes flickered over Patricia with a smirk. “Honestly, I kind of can’t wait to see you turn tail and run again, big sis.”
“By all means, keep waiting,” Patricia replied, turning around slowly to meet her gaze.
“I’m treating everyone to dinner tonight. Could you let them know for me, little sister?”
“Oh, so now I’m your secretary? You seriously need me to pass on your dinner plans too?” Ruby shot back, voice dry as dust.
“What else can I do? You’re the only one here I actually know,” Patricia replied, all innocent charm.
“Aurora, get in here,” Ruby called out toward the hall.
Aurora rushed over, a little out of breath. “Ms. Martin?”
Ruby jerked her chin toward Patricia. “You’ll be working with her from now on.”
Aurora glanced nervously between the two sisters. “Uh… how am I supposed to tell you apart?”
“Easy. I’m Ms. Martin. She’s Ms. Ruby Martin. Sound good to you, little sister?” Patricia tossed the question right back, her smile polite but cold.
She was just calling me ‘big sis’ a second ago. Now she wants to stick me with ‘Ms. Ruby Martin’?
Ruby’s face darkened and she spat out, “Do whatever you want.”
Patricia had clearly won this round, leaving Ruby fuming but with nothing to say.
Inside her new office, Patricia listened as Aurora introduced the rest of the team, rattling off everything from their sales records to their hometowns.
“The planning department only had Ms. Ruby Martin before this. I guess we’ll have to reshuffle the teams after the meeting,” Aurora said, a little worried.
Dropping a new Ms. Martin into the mix was bound to stir things up.
Patricia tapped her fingers on the desk, cool and powerful. Her voice was calm, almost lazy. “If you’d rather work for someone else, just say so. I won’t hold it against you.”
“Oh, no, not at all!” Aurora shook her hands, frantic. “I was just saying.”
