That is so Oliver, Patricia thought, shaking her head with a little smile. She could totally see him being the strict-dad type one day. The idea made her pause. Was she really thinking that far ahead already?
The car rolled into Cloud Peak, and Johns looked like he was on a mission to save the three poor souls upstairs. He carried a tray up, walking extra carefully, and set it down right next to Oliver. “Sir, your wife’s home.”
Colton, who’d been looking absolutely miserable, suddenly lit up like he’d seen a miracle. Roger muttered under his breath, “Thank goodness.” For the first time, they actually got what Grandma always said—get married, and life will never be the same. Well, here it was. Change had arrived.
Downstairs, Patricia finished washing her hands and started up the stairs, nerves buzzing in her stomach. She slowed outside Oliver’s study, heart thumping. The truth was, she was just as nervous as everyone else. Oliver had that vibe, like he was always ready to call you out.
Before she could overthink it any more, Sara rushed over, grabbed her arm, and practically dragged her toward the study. “Aunt Patricia, hurry! You have to help!”
“Wait, what’s going on? At least tell me first,” Patricia said, trying to resist.
“It’s work. Uncle Oliver is being a total perfectionist again. You know how scary month-end is around here.” Sara pointed to the dark circles under her eyes. “Look at me. If my mom saw this, she’d freak out.”
“She’d probably think I’d been shipped off to some sketchy place or something,” Sara groaned. “Up at six, home at nine, seven days a week—this is brutal!”
They reached the door, and Sara announced, “Uncle Oliver, Aunt Patricia’s back!”
Patricia looked at Oliver, took a breath, and managed, “Are you done for the night?”
“Did you need something?” Oliver’s voice was calm, but Patricia could tell he was onto them. He knew Sara had sent in reinforcements. He wasn’t easy to fool.
Colton and Roger were practically holding their breath, silently begging her to say something—anything—to save them.
“No,” Patricia said, giving her head a little shake. “I’m just going to shower and get some sleep. If you’re working late again…”
