“I’ll check on the process for you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Chelsea narrowed her eyes, picking up on Patricia’s tone. “Wait, are you saying you actually know someone who could get me in?”

“I’m not sure yet. Let me ask around first.” Patricia didn’t want to get her hopes up for nothing.

“Oh my god, you really are my sister—my one and only lifesaver!” For the first time in what felt like forever, Chelsea felt a little spark of hope break through the gloom.

No one knew how rough her week had been. Her dad might be successful, but he was impossible to get ahold of when she needed him. And her mom? She’d never bothered with this sort of thing.

So Chelsea just waited, hoping her dad would finally reply, clinging to that thin chance. She never expected Patricia would be the one to step up.

“Our sisterly bond is next-level. Come on, have some soup.” Chelsea grabbed her bowl, ready to pour Patricia some broth, but Patricia stopped her with a firm hand.

“Your spoon just fell in the pot. It’s dirty.”

Chelsea could only stare, speechless.

The hot pot restaurant buzzed with the hum of old fans, the air thick with spicy broth. By the time they finished eating, both of them were sweating buckets.

When they left, Patricia lifted her arm and took a sniff, immediately regretting it. No way was she going to the office smelling like this.

She swung by Chelsea’s apartment nearby, took a quick shower, changed clothes, and only then made her way to work.

When Patricia finally walked into the office at two, her team shot her all kinds of looks.

She wasn’t sure what was up when Ruby appeared out of nowhere.

“Wow, you finally made it. Let’s get this meeting started.”

In the conference room, Ruby sat at the head of the table, the big screen behind her showing the new marketing plan for their smart home line.

Patricia’s own late-night revisions were still fresh in her mind. After Victor finished his report, Ruby turned to Patricia, eyes sharp.

“So, does your team have a better idea?”
