“That scared the life out of me. Honestly, I keep waiting for those two to just start brawling in the office.”
“If they do, are we supposed to break it up or pick sides?”
“I say we just pretend to care. You really want to get in the middle of that mess?” someone chimed in, weighing the pros and cons.
“There aren’t any permanent enemies, just permanent interests. They could be fighting today and sitting down for drinks tomorrow if it suits them. We’re just pawns in their game, you know?”
A couple of people nodded along, clearly agreeing.
By the coffee machine, Aurora pressed the button and listened to the beans grinding while catching snippets of the latest office gossip behind her.
“Aurora, what do you think?”
She froze for a second, then turned around. “I try not to think about it. Whatever the boss says, that’s what I go with.”
That was her out-loud answer, but in her head, she knew Ruby didn’t stand a chance against Patricia. One was all impulse, the other always had a plan. The winner was obvious.
Patricia honestly looked like she was just playing along for fun.
“Shouldn’t you all be getting ready for the afternoon livestream? Don’t come crying to me if you get chewed out,” Aurora said, ending the conversation.
Martin Group’s smart home division had brought in a celebrity spokesperson, hired a home decor influencer, and was now pushing Ruby to the front. The whole company was treating her like their new star brand.
The coffee finished brewing. Aurora poured a latte and took it straight to Patricia’s desk.
Patricia idly swirled her stir stick around the rim of the cup, her eyes lighting up with a soft smile as she watched the creamy coffee.
“Did you finish the proposals I asked for?”
“They’re done. I already sent them to your email,” Aurora replied. Then she hesitated. “I just don’t get it—why is everything centered around Ms. Ruby Martin?”
They’d all worked so hard on the campaign, but when you looked at it, the whole thing was just about giving Ruby more exposure. They were even lining up the biggest media platforms for her. Aurora just didn’t understand.
Patricia stopped stirring, picked up her cup, and smiled that mysterious smile she always had. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
As Aurora left, Patricia’s phone lit up on her desk.
