"Stop messing around."
"Jackson, come in with me. Aiden, wait here."
The two slipped inside, playing it cool like they were just regular clients. They picked a trainer and let him show them around the club.
They were just about to hear about how to pick the perfect trainer when a group appeared at the turn of the wooden staircase.
Howard led the way with another city official, and behind them came a line of Newton Enterprises execs. Everyone looked like they were riding high, probably celebrating some huge new deal.
Patricia glanced away, pretending to be interested in the lawn as the trainer kept talking.
Then, someone in that group missed a step and nearly fell, which made Patricia look over.
Suddenly, all eyes were on her.
A gasp broke out from the crowd.
"Is that the ex-princess?"
"Oh my god!"
Two voices of shock rang out, and the smile dropped off Howard’s face in an instant.
Kyle, the mayor of Riverdale, spotted Patricia right away. They’d crossed paths a couple of times, back when they were younger and more recently too. She remembered bumping into him at the hospital during her rehab, when he’d brought some city leaders for an inspection. They’d even chatted for a bit.
Kyle always had this warmth in his words, something he couldn’t really hide.
He and Atticus had gone to the military academy together and served in the same unit for years. After Kyle got hurt on a mission and snagged a Medal of Honor, he left the military and went into politics.
Riverdale had always been a city where fortunes and politics shifted constantly.
When Kyle hit a rough patch, he turned to Atticus, who then introduced him to Jason. They became allies, maybe even friends, but never really close.
Then Jason and his wife died.
"Patricia?" Kyle gently signaled the others to hang back.
Patricia gave him a sweet, polite, "Hey, Kyle."
He looked her up and down, lingering on her legs, surprised. "You’re all better?"
"Yeah, totally fine now."
"Completely?"
