The Riverdale Charity Gala happened every year. Some galas were just for show, packed with rich folks and influencers desperate for photo ops. But tonight’s event was different. This was one of the rare high-society gatherings that actually meant something. The entrance fee alone kept out anyone who wasn’t truly elite. Even celebrities had to reserve their spots months in advance, and the donation requirement was so outrageous it scared off anyone hoping to use the party to snag a wealthy date. Only the A-list made the cut.
Ruby was the star of Riverdale these days. Everyone knew her as the hardworking, sweet-hearted heiress. Nearly ten million followers watched her every move, and even the Martin Group was basking in her glow lately.
“That dress must’ve cost a fortune!” Sara said from the backseat of the business car, watching as Ruby was led inside by staff. She glanced at Patricia. “Don’t tell me you picked that out for her, Aunt Patricia?”
Patricia nodded. “That was me.”
Roger shot her a look. “You really went all out.”
Patricia waved him off. “Please. It’s a knockoff. Didn’t cost much at all.”
Like she’d ever buy Ruby the real thing. Ruby didn’t deserve it. Patricia wanted to make a point: no matter how fancy it looked, a fake was still a fake. Ruby would never be anything more than second best.
Colton grinned. “Classic Aunt Patricia. Gotta respect it.”
He leaned in curiously. “So who’s wearing the real one tonight?”
“I’m more interested in how you convinced Ruby hers is legit,” he laughed.
Patricia just smiled. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
This was going to be good.
Inside, the guests followed servers to a lounge to relax before dinner. Tina stood out in a custom ice-blue cheongsam, the perfect image of an elegant matriarch. She smoothed a stray hair behind Ruby’s ear, her eyes soft with pride and affection. “You look gorgeous.”
Ruby clung to Tina’s arm, playing coy. “Guess I got it from my mom.”
