“Someone’s in a really good mood today.”
At the Newton family’s villa, Kelly was out in the garden, humming to herself as she trimmed the flowers and shrubs. Sunlight spilled through the trees, brushing her shoulders with warmth.
Judy walked over carrying a tray of desserts just as Kelly stepped back to admire the pine tree she’d been shaping.
“How’s my tree?” Kelly asked, glancing at Judy with a smile.
“I honestly have no idea, ma’am. Gardening’s just not my thing,” Judy said, a little sheepish.
Kelly laughed and took the tray from her. “You know what I like most about you?”
Judy looked confused. “What’s that?”
“You never pretend you know something when you don’t. When I was teaching, nothing drove me crazier than students acting like they understood when they didn’t.”
Judy grinned. “You’re retired now and you still can’t stop thinking about your students?”
Kelly had taught music at Riverdale College for years. Even after she retired, the school tried to hire her back. But the Newtons never needed the money, and after a lifetime of working, Kelly was perfectly happy to stay home.
“It’s just habit, I guess,” Kelly said, arranging the desserts on the table. “The other day, that girl from the Holmes family wanted me to coach her. I told her I’d think about it. If things stay calm, maybe I’ll do it.”
“As long as you’re happy, that’s what matters,” Judy said with a kind smile.
Even Grandma noticed how cheerful Kelly was.
“Something good happen?” Grandma asked, waiting until the staff had cleared out.
Kelly smiled. “Howard said there’s finally some progress with the energy land deal. That’s why I’m in such a good mood.”
Grandma let out a low chuckle. “You know, it’s pretty cute. You’re in your fifties, but you still get all excited about your husband’s work, just like a girl with a crush.”
“It’s easy when your family’s good to you,” Kelly said, always knowing how to lift Grandma’s spirits.
Grandma looked at her for a long moment and sighed. “If you end up even half as wise as I am, this family will be just fine.”
Was she giving advice? Kelly’s smile faded a little. “You’re still thinking about Patricia, aren’t you?”
