When Patricia headed out that morning, Oliver had already laid down the law—everyone was coming home for dinner tonight. Nothing special, just the usual family meal. He was busy, she was busy, and with the month ending soon, the three kids had been working overtime every night.
Honestly, Oliver probably just wanted an excuse to give the kids a night off, but he couldn’t make it too obvious.
At five thirty, Patricia left the office, right as Riverdale traffic was turning into a nightmare. She braced herself for the crawl home with Wendy.
Halfway through the gridlock, Jackson’s phone rang. Ruby was awake.
“Let’s go to the hospital,” Patricia said.
Aiden looked at her, wide-eyed. “Ma’am, Mr. Padilla’s already home.”
If she skipped dinner, Oliver was going to lose his mind. He could be so unpredictable sometimes.
Why did she keep standing her husband up like this?
“It’s just dinner. So what if we’re a little late? If he really wants to have dinner with Miss Patricia, she can come home whenever,” Jackson said.
“The problem is, he says he wants dinner with her, but really he just expects her to drop everything for him,” Aiden shot back.
Jackson rolled his eyes. “You’re just trying to stir things up between them.”
“Don’t start. I just know what Miss Patricia wants most right now.”
“There’s always a little compromise in a relationship.”
“So why can’t Mr. Padilla be the one to give in for once?”
Patricia rubbed her temples. “Are you two seriously fighting about this? Don’t you guys have anything better to do?”
“Just drive to the hospital. I’ll talk to him.”
She sent Oliver a quick message and waited, but got nothing back.
She was about to call when his reply finally came through.
