Aiden’s hands were locked around the steering wheel, eyes darting to every car and shadow on the road. He was just about to hit the gas when a black van cut in out of nowhere, muscling him out of his lane until he was hugging the edge of the road.

His bodyguard glanced over, eyebrows raised. “Seriously? Is that guy blind or just an idiot?”

“What’s his deal? Is he trying to ram us? Does he not see there’s a guardrail right there?”

Aiden tried to pull ahead, but the van stuck close, refusing to let up. He pressed harder on the accelerator, but the van shot forward too, smashing into the front of his car.

Metal screamed as Aiden’s SUV skidded against the guardrail, then suddenly broke through it. The next thing he knew, the world was turning upside down as the car plunged straight into the river below.

Tina’s phone buzzed on her desk, slicing through the quiet of her office. She was leaning back, eyes closed, trying to steal a moment of rest. The text came through, and she picked up her phone, glancing at the message.

Her whole body seemed to relax as she let out a long breath. She leaned forward, touched her face, and let a slow, satisfied smile spread across her lips.

“Ms. Klotz, the boardroom’s all set up. We moved everything in,” her assistant called from the doorway.

“Great. Could you grab me some breakfast? Also, did you bring any makeup? I could use a little touch-up.”

This was the day she’d been waiting for—there was no way she’d show up looking anything but flawless. She was going to walk into that boardroom, head high, and make sure everyone knew who was really in charge.

“And call the press,” she added.

Let them talk, let the rumors fly. It didn’t matter. As long as things ended the way she wanted, she could handle whatever came her way.

By eight-thirty, the board members started showing up one after another. Tina stood by the door, greeting each of them with a practiced smile.

Curtis walked in first, looking around as if expecting someone. “Ms. Klotz, where’s Mr. Martin? He’s not here yet?”
