You Looked Down on Me Once, Now You Look Up. novel Chapter 577

“Why her? Why does Patricia always get her way?”

“Why am I the one breaking my back while she just waltzes in and enjoys the fruits of my work? And Mitch—what happened there? We were fine last night, chatting like usual, and now all of a sudden he turns on me.”

Tina wasn’t the only one who thought this was weird. Ann was just as confused.

She could sort of get why Curtis would switch sides, but Allen? Everyone knew Allen was proud—if it was a peer, maybe he’d play along, but Patricia? No way would he lower himself for her.

And Mitch? That was the real curveball.

He’d always followed Emerson’s lead, never straying. Who’d have guessed he’d flip at the last minute?

No one here was clueless—they all knew how the game was played.

Now that things were spiraling, Ann didn’t stick around. She gave Tina a few words of comfort, made up an excuse, and left.

She headed straight for Mitch, determined to get some answers.

Mitch’s son was in his early twenties, interning at some finance company. When Ann arrived, the two of them were deep in conversation.

She greeted them, made small talk.

Once the son left the room, Ann cut to the chase. “Seriously, what happened? We agreed on everything—how could you just bail on me last second? If you were going to switch sides, couldn’t you have at least warned me?”

“It all happened really fast.”

“Just tell me,” Ann insisted. They’d known each other for years—maybe not close, but there was still a sense of trust.

Mitch didn’t sugarcoat it. “I went to Martin Group today and saw Hector from Pacific Capital getting out of a car with Patricia in the parking lot.”

Ann’s eyebrows shot up. She leaned back, staring at Mitch. “So Patricia has Pacific Capital backing her?”

Mitch didn’t answer directly. He just kept going. “Tina was so confident Patricia wouldn’t show—she must’ve set something up to keep her away. But then Patricia arrives anyway, and Hector from Pacific Capital brings her in. What does that tell you?”
