A Love to Die For (Nathaly) novel Chapter 24

Chapter 24

Three days later, Lina was discharged from the hospital.

Elijah returned to his home country.

His wound was far from his heart, but it had injured his lung, so he still needed to recuperate quietly back home.

Before boarding his private jet, Elijah earnestly begged Nathaly to see him off.

Nathaly was brushing Lina’s hair. She remained silent for a long time and did not agree.

“There are too many things between us. It never should have continued.”

Elijah knew that his mistakes had been unforgivable.

“Take good care of yourself.”

After Elijah softly reminded her, his assistant wheeled him away.

Half a year later, a major tsunami warning was issued for the sea area where Quinten worked.

“Quick, we have to leave immediately.” Quinten’s face was grim.

It was the first time Nathaly had seen him so nervous.

Their community was very close to the coastline. In previous years, similar tsunamis had occurred, but each time, it was enough just to stay indoors temporarily.

Never before had she seen Quinten look so panicked.

“Hurry, grab your important documents. There was an undersea earthquake twenty kilometers away. We must reach a safe, higher ground within half an hour.”

Hearing this, Eleanor and Nathaly stopped asking questions, hurried home to get their documents, and then everyone drove to the shelter.

They thought they would only need to hide in the shelter for a couple of days with food and water.

But unexpectedly, the tsunami was far too powerful this time.

Not only did it destroy the basic infrastructure, but it also brought nearly a day and night of severe storms.

The water level never receded, and their food was gradually running out. The rescue teams had not yet arrived to save them.

In their moment of despair, Elijah arrived in a helicopter.

“Nathy-”

The roar of the helicopter in the raging storm brought hope of survival to everyone.

Nathaly had no idea how he had found her.

“Elijah, thank you.”

In the face of a natural disaster, it seemed petty to dwell on matters of the heart.

With Elijah’s help, everyone trapped on the top floor of the shelter was evacuated.

Through the plane window, Nathaly saw the vast community submerged by seawater, her heart filled with mixed emotions.

She had lived here for nearly a year and had already grown attached to the place.

Thanks to the Tuckett Group’s connections, they landed directly at a hotel in the neighboring city on higher ground.

After a day and night of fear, Eleanor hugged Lina and fell into a deep sleep. Quinten, meanwhile, left halfway to as- sist with the rescue efforts.

After taking a hot shower, Nathaly finally relaxed, drying her hair with a towel.

Elijah finished his phone call and walked in from the balcony.

The two exchanged a glance, countless words caught in their throats, but neither knew where to begin.

Nathaly thanked him again.

Elijah smiled.

“They are your family. This time, I won’t let them get hurt again.”

His voice was hoarse and soft.

Only then did Nathaly notice that he was unnaturally thin, and that he had never taken off the hat he wore.

“You’re ill.” Nathaly stated.

Elijah lowered his eyes and gave a bitter smile. “I’ve done too many bad things-maybe it’s retribution. When I was injured half a year ago, they found a shadow in my stomach. By the time I went back for chemotherapy, it was al- ready late-stage stomach cancer. But I still wanted to live a little longer, to see you a little longer. It’s just…’

He quickly turned his head and wiped away his tears.

“Luckily, I’m still alive, so I could save you this time. But from now on, you’ll have to rely on yourself, Nathy.”

Nathaly didn’t know what to say.

After a moment’s hesitation, she took a lucky charm from her pocket and put it around his neck.
