In truth, as Gaten’s business partner, he had long been drawn to Demi. When he learned of the years of abuse she had suffered, his feelings of admiration quietly turned to pity.
Now, though Demi looked frail and worn, she still tried to comfort him with a faint smile, insisting she was fine. Gaten’s face darkened with distress, and his suspicion deepened; he was convinced the wedding fire had been our doing.
Soon after, Dixie and Cooper arrived at the ward. The moment Dixie saw her mother’s paper-white face, she burst into tears and threw herself into Demi’s arms. Demi only whispered that she was fine.
Cooper took a call and rushed off to the company. Gaten went to get medicine for Demi, leaving only mother and daughter in the room.
Only then did Demi drop her mask. “It’s a pity the baby is gone,” she muttered bitterly. “Who
knows if I’ll ever be able to tie Gaten down now.”
“Daughter, you mustn’t have another accident. No matter whose child it is, you have to cling to Cooper and make him take responsibility,” Demi said firmly. She had always known exactly wha kind of daughter she had; after all, they were two of a kind.
Getting close to Cooper and Gaten had only ever been for the money. Without that, a widow and her daughter would’ve been swallowed whole by the world.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I won’t let that bitch Sabrina ruin our lives again. She better pray there are nc more ‘accidents,”” Dixie said with a sneer. Demi instantly understood the message behind he
words.
“Just make sure it’s quiet. If something goes wrong, blame Cooper.”
Dixie pulled out her phone and started dialing, planning my downfall.
After leaving the hospital, I took the box to Cooper’s home. The last time I left, I had already wiped my fingerprints from the door lock. This time, I placed the “gift” at the doorstep, rang the doorbell, and walked away without looking back.
Cooper’s mother opened the door. Seeing the box, she lit up, thinking her son had finally been discharged. But when she assumed it was just another delivery, her excitement faded. She gave the box a careless kick and turned away.
After leaving Cooper’s house, my heart stayed heavy. It didn’t feel like the revenge I had imagined; it just left me hollow.
Sensing the emptiness in me, Kevin drove me to my old favorite racetrack.
The place was livelier now, filled with new faces. But the moment I stepped onto the grounds, memories rushed back, of speed, thrill, and the reckless fire I once lived for.
Ever since the accident, my mother had forbidden me from racing again. But standing here, I could still feel that old heartbeat pulsing beneath my skin.
“I miss it,” I murmured, sitting on the bench. “Back then, I designed my car. After that last race, it got scrapped. I haven’t touched the wheel since.”
“Everything’s over now. Why not give it another shot?” Kevin had come prepared.
I shook my head.
“What, still thinking about ‘Kevy’?” Kevin teased.
I looked up at him, puzzled. “How do you know about ‘Kevy’?”
Back then, when I was bedridden, it was always Ava and my mother by my side. Kevin had never shown up, and Ava had only said he was busy preparing to go abroad.
But the faint curve of Kevin’s lips told me something was off. My heart skipped.
“Wait… you’re ‘Kevy’? You were the one who saved me?”
Kevin didn’t answer. He smiled and nodded, then lifted his sleeve to show a scar on his arm. Though faded, the long mark remained clear.
“At the time, I didn’t even know it was you. I pulled you out of the car, but the flames shot up right after. Lucky I shielded you, or that pretty face of yours wouldn’t have made it,” Kevin said with a smile.
I didn’t speak. Tears welled in my eyes. It wasn’t nearly as lighthearted as he made it seem; if he hadn’t saved me in time, I would’ve died. After that, I spent a month in the hospital to recover slightly.
It was because of that life-saving moment that I had felt so grateful to Cooper. But now, realized I had mistaken who truly pulled me from the brink of death.
‘Why didn’t you tell me the truth back then?” My voice trembled as my eyes blurred with tears.
‘After I pulled you out, I was seriously hurt. We both passed out. Later, I heard Cooper was standing nearby, ready to leave. But when he saw your car, he probably figured out you weren’t from just any family, so he rushed you to the hospital.”
I froze. When I had first woken up in that hospital bed, Cooper had been right there, calmly eyeing my mother and Ava. He knew the truth, yet chose to stay silent, all to gain our gratitude.
In the end, I married him. And with the support of my family’s wealth, his career soared like
wildfire.
