After my death, my husband who had wanted to divorce went insane. novel Chapter 15

15

I sat at the corner of the staircase, fury simmering in silence. So, it turned out they had been working together all along.

Cooper had gone to fetch medicine for Dixie, leaving her alone on the sofa. Her voice rang out, slow and deliberate. “Come out. Haven’t you heard enough?”

So she had noticed me long ago, and everything she said earlier had been staged. Since hiding was no longer an option, I didn’t try. I had too many questions anyway.

I stepped toward her. She looked me up and down, her gaze dripping with smug satisfaction as she took in my frail, hollowed-out figure.

“How have you been lately, Sabrina? I’m fortunate, you know, even if you tried to harm me, so what? My child and I are still wonderful.”

She stepped closer, flaunting the medical report in her hand, her smile full of pride and

contempt.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself. I’ve already aborted the child. Whatever happens between you and Cooper from now on has nothing to do with me.”

I asked coldly, “Just one thing, back when Cooper brought me for that check-up, you swapped my report, didn’t you? You went as far as forging proof that I couldn’t conceive. You went all out.” I had long suspected Dixie’s schemes. Cooper had always longed for a child, yet even as my belly swelled by the day, there wasn’t a trace of joy in his eyes. That alone had set off alarms in my heart.

When Cooper left again for another business trip, I finally got my hands on the original report. After digging deeper, I confirmed it had been switched, clearly Dixie’s doing.

“So what if it was me? Cooper now believes that bastard wasn’t even his. Even if you got rid of it,

do

you think that erases everything?”

“Right now, Cooper listens only to me. The divorce? That was my idea.” Dixie spoke like a proud

victor.

I had already gotten the answer I came for, so I turned to leave without a word. But she wasn’t satisfied with my indifference. She suddenly stepped forward and gripped my wrist tightly, as if determined to teach me a lesson.

Just then, Cooper emerged from the consultation room with the medicine. Seeing him, Dixie quickly leaned in toward me. I shook her off, but she seized the moment to fall to the floor, feigning innocence with a look of wounded grievance.

“Didn’t expect to see you here, Sabrina,” she whimpered, her voice trembling as if her heart was breaking. “Was trying to burn me alive last time not enough? Now you want to lay hands on me again?”

Cooper dropped the medicine and rushed toward her, panic flashing in his eyes. I didn’t want to waste another glance on them, but his anger flared, he grabbed me by the neck, and raised his hand to strike.

Before he could move, his arm was forcefully held back. “What? You planning to do to Sabrina

the same thing as last time?” Kevin’s cold voice came from behind.

Worried when I hadn’t returned for a long while, Kevin had come looking for me, only to find Cooper about to strike. This time, he didn’t hold back. His fist landed hard on Cooper’s face. Clutching his cheek, Cooper stumbled back, stunned that Kevin would lay hands on him over

“I was going to let you off for Sabrina’s sake. But now, there’s no need.”

“What do you mean?” Cooper looked baffled.

Kevin didn’t answer. He simply helped me up gently and walked away with me.

“I should’ve finished her off back then,” Dixie said coldly.

Just then, her phone rang. It was Gaten.

“Dixie, come back quickly. Demi’s finally woken up!” His voice trembled with tears.

When the accident occurred, Demi had instinctively shielded Dixie with her own body. Her injuries turned out to be far more severe. Already unfit for childbirth, she suffered a miscarriage. Gaten sat beside her hospital bed, holding her medical report with trembling hands. He had intended to hide the truth when she woke, but in the end, Demi still found out.

She didn’t cry out or throw a fit. She simply leaned against his shoulder, her face etched with sorrow, tears trailing silently down her cheeks.

“Gaten, I thought I’d never see you again. Who wanted to hurt us?”

“When I was unconscious, I had such a long, long dream. In it, I saw myself beaten half to death by Dixie’s father again, but this time, you stood up for me. You took me away, and that’s how survived.”

Tears shimmered in Demi’s eyes, and her words left Gaten’s eyes moist as well.

To outsiders, Demi’s husband appeared to be a gentleman, but behind closed doors, he was a drunk who only knew how to raise his fists.

Even when she clutched her child in her arms, begging for mercy, all she received was another savage beating.

She endured years of this torment until one night, when he stumbled home drunk again, ready to strike, only to fall from their third-floor balcony accidentally. He died on the spot.

From that night on, Demi lived a life of widowhood that others looked upon with pity.

Back when she was still silently enduring the abuse, Gaten had already noticed the bruises on her skin.

As the two gradually came into contact, Demi began to fall for the man who, at least on the surface, looked every bit the proper gentleman.

And after her husband’s death, their encounters grew more frequent.
