I talked with Conrad for hours about what I need to get out of him. Apart from Malik’s location, we don’t really know what to ask. I need to get as much information from him as I can.

I’m in the kitchen cutting the apples with Mary. Using a blade right is cathartic, but she can sense my nerves. She says nothing, though. I suppose being nervous is normal, though.

I take the bowl of apples and head over to the medical centre. I’m confused when I see Liam.

“What are you doing here?”

He grins. “Conrad and Arthur wanted someone with you, but they both agreed that if it was either of them, they would kill him. So you

stuck with me“.

I smile at the thought of them. I have to keep them in mind to get through this.

I walk up to Donovan’s room and take a deep breath to calm my nerves before I enter.

I slowly push open the door, and his face lights up, as if he is greeting an old friend.

“Luna Queen. You came back“.

I smile and nod politely. “Yes, I promised I would“.

He looks at the bowl and starts smelling the air. “You…..your brought me…..“.

“Apples and butterscotch sauce. Mary mentioned they were your favorite“.

I walk over and make sure I am far enough away that he can’t grab me again, but close enough that I can feed him with the fork.

I put a piece on the form, and he eagerly opened his mouth like a pup trying to find a bottle. I put it in his mouth, and his eye fluttered shut with such enjoyment that my skin crawls.

When he opens his eyes again, he stares directly at me. “I always knew you would be an amazing mate. Why did you have to pick

Conrad?“.

I decided the best thing is to tell the truth. “I didn’t. The Moon Goddess did. I’m sure you have read in the library that blessed wolves don’t feel the mate bond at first, but it can be earned. That’s what he did“.

“Malik would have earned it, too. You just have to get rid of the shadows first“,

I need to change the topic to getting information. “If I’m going to get rid of the shadows, I need to find him first. Do you know where he

is?“.

He looks at me, confused. “I already told you. He is coming here“.

I give him another piece of apple while I think of the best approach. “I know. And thank you for telling me that. But if he is coming here in a few days, it will put a lot of wolves at risk. It would be better if I went to him. Might give me an advance if I surprise him“.

He lets out a laugh as if I said the funniest thing. “He has a full shadow barrier, silly. You can’t sneak up on him, as they tell him, as soon as anyone is close. They can also conceal him. That’s how he shot Conrad and how he got his toys“.

My blood runs cold. “What do you mean by toys?”

“When you took all the pack members, you took his toys too. He had to get some new ones to keep the shadows happy“.

I know exactly what he means. The thought sickens me to my stomach. Donovan’s noticed this and is worried he has upset me.

“Don’t worry. They’re dead now. He actually picked a blonde one first, but got bored quickly. The other one had hair like yours, and he liked her much better. I could tell because of how badly the body was beaten before I buried them“.

I try to gather my thoughts, as this might give us a location. “Where did you bury them?”

“In the forest where we took them. We stayed in the caves as we planned. Malik just talked to the shadows, so when he left me alone, I was able to think of a way to come here. I wasn’t able to until Malik ordered me to deliver the rabbits“.

I try to push down my disgust to keep the conversation going. “Donovan, how did you end up in the state you did? That wasn’t from dropping off the rabbits“.

He looks distressed for a moment before going back to his calm demeanor. “That was the shadows. They possess Malik, so it’s not his fault. Like with the toys. Conrad tortured and killed your father when he was possessed, and he’s fine now. It will be the same with Malik. You have to choose him to make him better. He needs you“.

How did everything become so twisted in his mind? “Donovan. Conrad didn’t choose the shadows. Malik did. He voluntarily made a deal with them for power“.

He starts pleading with me. “He was confused. He didn’t know what he was doing“.

“Then tell me this, Donovan. Before he was possessed by the shadows, did he ever hurt anyone, in any way?”.

He pauses just long enough for me to know the answer. “Please. It’s not his fault. It was hard for him knowing he was an Alpha and wouldn’t lead our pack. He was always told he would be a warrior, but he knew he was destined for more. He is meant to be the Alpha King with you by his side. That’s his true destiny“.

I’m getting frustrated now. “Conrad has the blood of the Moon Goddess in his veins. That’s not something Malik can take away from him”.

Donovan’s smile puts me on edge. “Don’t worry about that. The Shadows are going to fix it. The Moon energy that flows in Conrad’s veins will be transferred, so you will still be the rightful Luna Queen“.

My stomach plummets, and my heart sinks. “What do you mean by transferred?”
