LUNA
“Oh my gosh, Luna! You’re so pretty,” Arden and Tessa exclaimed.
Cade even gave me a thumbs up while Elias nodded in approval.
However, Abel didn’t even look. His eyes were glued to the floor instead of me.

I pressed my lips together, trying not to show how much it bothered me. He could’ve at least looked.
“We’ll get this one,” Tessa said, her hands clasped together as she admired the dress.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
“No worries,” she replied, grinning. “A dress this pretty on you–I’d have bought it even if it wasn’t for my wedding.”
That made me smile. Tessa was so radiant that it was impossible not to feel lighter around her.
I went back behind the curtain to change. The beige fabric slipped off easily, and as I folded it carefully, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. For a moment, I didn’t recognize the girl staring back. Her cheeks were slightly flushed, her eyes brighter than usual. She looked… happier.
But the longer I stared, the clearer it became that the glow wasn’t from joy. It was from hope. Hope that maybe, the man waiting outside would see her–not as a human burden or a temporary arrangement, but as something more.
I sighed, shaking my head. “Wishful thinking,” I muttered to my reflection.
By the time I came out, Abel was standing near the door with his hands in his pockets.
When he turned, his gaze brushed over me and said simply, “Let’s go.”
I nodded.
“See you at the wedding next week!” Tessa called out as we left.
“See you,” I said, cheerfully waving at her.
Outside, the sunlight was already starting to dim. We walked to his car and I sat in the

The moment the car began moving, he let out a tired sigh and massaged the bridge of his nose. “I told you not to open the door,” he said quietly.
“It was Arden,” I muttered, crossing my arms.
“What if it wasn’t her?”
I looked out the window. “Then I would’ve handled it,” I said.
“Handled it,” he repeated.
“Yes,” I said firmly. “I’m old enough, you know. You might be ten years older than me, but I’m still a fully capable adult.”
“You can’t keep locking me up in that house forever,” I added softly.
He exhaled through his nose, calm but cold. “It’s not about that.”
“Then what is it about?”
His eyes stayed fixed on the road. “You wouldn’t understand.”
I scoffed. “Try me.”
“I said drop it, Luna.”
The way he said my name made me bite my tongue.
“You didn’t even say anything about the dress,” I blurted out before I could stop myself.
“What about the dress?” he asked, still not looking at me.
I pursed my lips. Well, those words shouldn’t have come out of my mouth. Still, I couldn’t stop myself.
“Are you really my mate or what?”
That made him pause. I turned to the side to hide my embarrassment.
“It was pretty,” he said after a while.
My mouth fell open slightly. “Huh?”

He glanced at me then, only for a moment. “The dress,” he said. “You were pretty in it.”
The tiniest smile tried to form on my lips, but before it could, he muttered something under his breath.
“Fuck.”
The warmth vanished instantly.
“What?” I asked, alarmed.
His hand gripped the wheel tighter. His eyes flicked to the rearview mirror. “I think we’re being followed.”
I frantically turned around, but he squeezed my thigh.
“Stay still,” he said.
My heart hammered in my chest as he pressed on the gas, the trees rushing past us faster.
The sound of the engine deepened, swallowing my next breath.
I looked at the side mirror and saw three cars rushing over to us.
My fingers dug into the seat. “Abel…”
“I see them,” he muttered. His hands tightened around the wheel, veins showing beneath his skin.
He clicked his tongue. “He’s going this route, huh?”
“Who?” I whispered.
“Who do you think?” he said under his breath. “Two can play that game.”
Before I could even ask what he meant, he turned the wheel hard to the left.
The tires screeched against the asphalt, and the car swerved violently off the road. My body lurched forward; I clutched the seatbelt as branches slapped against the windows. The headlights carved through the thick fog as we plunged straight into the forest.
“Abel! What are you doing!?”
“Hang on,” he commanded.

The car jolted over roots and rock. Every bump made my heart slam harder. I could hear the snapping of branches behind us–two of the three cars had followed.
“Those bastards aren’t going to stop until I’m dead,” he muttered.
“He must’ve hired someone,” he continued. “Of course he did. He can’t even do his own dirty work.”
The car roared through the undergrowth, leaves and dirt flying up against the windows. My pulse was all over the place–I could barely breathe.
“Abel, there’s a tree!”
He swerved sharply, missing it by inches. My hand slammed against the door for balance. “You’re insane!”
“Abel, we can’t keep driving like this!”
“We’re not going to.”
Just then, he hit the brakes. The car spun once, tires screeching against the dirt before coming to a stop in a cloud of dust and broken leaves.
My breath caught. “Abel?”
“Get out,” he said.
“What-”
“Now, Luna.”
The sharp command in his voice sent shivers down my spine. I stumbled out of the car, the afternoon air biting against my skin.
I could hear the distant rumble of engines approaching again.
He looked around once. Then he turned to me.
“Stay close,” he said, eyes flashing faintly. Then, the sound of fabric tearing, bones cracking, and muscles stretching filled the space.
The shift was quick. And then, standing before me, was not Abel the man, but his wolf.
He growled low, a sound that vibrated in my chest.
