LUNA

I was back to rotting in this place.

Abel came and went like a shadow. After that night in the cabin, he always came home when I was already asleep and left when I hadn’t woken up. Sometimes I’d wake to the faint creak of the door or the soft weight of footsteps leaving. By the time I turned, there’d be nothing but the sound of the wind brushing past the windows.

Fortunately, today was Rowan and Tessa’s wedding.

Abel had no choice but to bring me with him this time. So, we were back in the car, driving down to the South.

I looked out the window, watching the world pass in streaks. The sun flickered through the trees, landing across Abel’s face every now and then, and I tried not to stare too long.

He hadn’t spoken since we left.

He sat there like the same cold statue from before, hands on the wheel, gaze straight ahead. It was infuriating.

The memory of that night wasn’t something I could just erase. The heat of his skin and the way his voice trembled when he whispered my name didn’t feel like mere accidents. They weren’t just me wanting it. But judging by how he was acting now, I might as well have been the only one there.

I huffed, crossing my arms, turning toward the window so I wouldn’t have to look at him.

The silence stretched on.

Somewhere in the middle of the drive, the rhythm of the car lulled me into sleep. I didn’t know how long I’d been out until I woke up with a sharp ache in my shoulder.

I winced, pressing my hand against it. Ow

The pain throbbed faintly, but I ignored it, stretching a little to shake it off. Before I could settle back into the seat, the car slowed down. Then it stopped completely.

I turned toward him. Why are we stopping?

Abel’s eyes were on me. “What’s wrong?he asked.

Huh?

He tilted his head slightly, his voice firmer now. You’re hurt.

1 frowned. What?

Your shoulder,he said, nodding toward it.

I looked down, rolling my shoulder experimentally. It still hurt, but not enough for him to slam on the brakes over it.

I forced a small laugh. “It’s nothing. I justslept weird, I guess.

He didn’t look convinced.

I sighed and pressed my fingers into the sore spot. It’s fine.I muttered.

Why would you even care?I added, the words slipping out before I could stop them.

I saw the faintest crack in that cold expression. Then, just as quickly, it was gone.

He looked away. His hand tightened on the steering wheel.

The engine started again.

The car rolled forward slowly, the hum of the tires filling the space where my heart had been beating too fast.

I turned back toward the window, pressing my forehead against the glass.

The room smelled like lilies and nervousness. Tessa was pacing back and forth in her white silk robe, fingers tangled together. The bridesmaidsroom was chaotic. Makeup brushes were scattered on the vanity, and a few stray petals from the bouquet fell to the floor.

I sat on the couch, watching them. I don’t think you have to worry about anything,I said, unable to stop the small chuckle that escaped me: You guys are perfect for each other.

Arden raised a brow at me, her reflection meeting mine in the mirror. Perfect?she echoed, brushing through Tessa’s curls one last time.

It seemed the universe made it so that your love story would be great at all times,” I said with a little shrug. Rowan looks at you like you hung the moon. It’s unfair to the rest of us mortals.
