The reception was smaller than I expected. However, then again, Arden did say that the entirety of the wedding was going to be intimate. I didn’t know why I thought the reception would be different.
Round tables were scattered around the clearing, cach one dressed in white linen and tiny flower arrangements. Someone had set up a small stage where the band was tuning their instruments, the faint hum of a cello melting into laughter and clinking glasses.
There were only about thirty guests. Arden said it was just family, close friends, and a few elders. I was seated beside Noelle at one of the tables near the dance floor. Arden and Cade were at the front table, of course. They were the maid of honor and best man after all. Arden’s head rested against Cade’s shoulder while he whispered something that made her blush. Every few minutes, he’d lean over to steal a kiss, earning himself an exaggerated glare from her.
I smiled faintly. It was nice.
Abel had gone to the buffet table to get food. He’d muttered something about bringing me a plate, though I wasn’t entirely sure if he meant it or if it was just an excuse to escape the crowd. Either way, I didn’t protest.
I let my eyes wander, and that’s when I saw a tiny girl sitting at the corner of the room, her legs swinging under the chair as she colored intently on a napkin with a set of crayons. Her tongue peeked out slightly as she concentrated, completely lost in her little world.
I couldn’t help but smile.
“That’s Calla,” Noelle said from beside me, noticing where I was looking.
“Calla?” I repeated.
“Tessa and Rowan’s daughter,” she explained.
My eyes widened a little. “She’s adorable.”
Noelle chuckled, leaning closer as if sharing a secret. “Oh, she’s more than adorable. You might pass out if you knew what she could do.”
I tilted my head to the side. “What do you mean?”
She only grinned, shaking her head. “Trust me, you’re not ready for that.”

I raised a brow.. “You can’t just say that and then not explain.”
Noelle laughed, holding up her hands. “Let’s just say she’s… gifted. You’ll see.”

1 looked back at Calla, who was now holding her drawing up to the light, admiring her work. Her crayon–streaked fingers were smudged with color.
“She seems very smart,” I murmured.
“Oh, she is,” Noelle said, eyes soft. “She’s Tessa and Rowan’s miracle, that one. She remembers. everything. She learns fast. She also has this way of reading people.”
I laughed quietly. “That sounds like Tessa.”
“And Rowan’s temper,” Noelle added with a smirk.
I smiled, but my thoughts were already drifting somewhere else.
If I ever had a child—Abel’s child—would she be like that? Would she be smart, too?
The thought came out of nowhere. I placed a hand on my stomach without meaning to, tracing small circles against the fabric of my dress. Would she have my hair, light and easily tangled? Or Abel’s–dark and smooth, always so neat? His eyes would be nice, I thought. Mine were too pale and thus, sensitive to sunlight.
Half–werewolf, half–human… what would that even look like? Would she be strong like him? Would she inherit his quiet nature, or my tendency to talk when I’m nervous?
Oh goodness. I was thinking way too much.
I shook my head, laughing softly at myself. “Focus, Luna,” I muttered under my breath.
Noelle gave me a puzzled look, but I just smiled and waved it off.
Still… the thought lingered.
I reached for my glass of water, trying to distract myself. The laughter and music swelled around us as the band started playing a soft tune. Rowan and Tessa were dancing in the middle of the floor, surrounded by fairy lights and smiling faces. Arden and Cade joined in next, followed by a few others.
I looked toward the buffet, expecting to see Abel coming back with food, but… he wasn’t there.
My gaze swept the room before I saw him.

He was near the bar, a drink in one hand, his shoulders relaxed while looking absolutely handsome. However, it wasn’t that which caught my breath.
It was who he was with.
A woman stood beside him–tall, elegant, with dark curls that shimmered under the lantern light. She said something, and Abel laughed.
I nearly choked on air. He was laughing?
His smile was rare enough, but he was laughing, hmm? Abel never laughed like that. At least, not with me.
I frowned, instinctively trying to mask the tightening in my chest with a sip of my drink.
Noelle must have noticed my stare because she leaned closer and whispered, “That’s Sandra.”
I tore my eyes away from Abel and raised an eyebrow. “Sandra?”
“She’s from where I am in Ylarc,” Noelle explained.
“A human?”
Noelle snorted softly. “Nope. She’s a full werewolf. She’s with our pack, but she’s rarely there because she has so many businesses in Ylarc.” She tilted her head slightly, lips twitching in amusement. “She’s rich. Like, ridiculously rich.”
I looked back at the woman, and I could tell that was true. It was obvious in her clothes and jewelry. They weren’t flashy at all, but you could just tell she was someone who grew up with
money.
Abel was talking to her, completely engaged. His eyes weren’t distant or guarded. He was leaning in slightly, a hand in his pocket with a glint of comfort on his face.
“When Abel visited back then with Rowan and Tessa, they met and talked business,” Noelle continued. “They became close.”
Close.
