Willow lowered her thick lashes and nodded softly. The day after tomorrow would mark the anniversary of her mother's passing, and she missed her terribly.
Every time someone mentioned Willow's mother, a gentle sorrow seemed to settle over the room. Yet, despite their best efforts, they couldn't help bringing her up. Willow was exceptional, but so was Sylvia—how could anyone not remember her?
A sudden knock broke the quiet melancholy in the study.
Willow glanced toward the door, puzzled. Had Mr. Redmond invited another guest? Who could it be?
"Mr. Redmond, it's Major. I have a question I'd like to discuss with you. May I come in?"
Normally, no one was allowed up to the second floor of the Redmond house without advance notice from a teacher. The family was particular about their privacy.
"Major?" Holcomb muttered, his brow furrowing as he tried—and failed—to recall the student's face.
Still, he motioned for them to enter. "Come in."
But Major didn't come alone. At his side was Evelyn.
Willow's expression tightened, barely perceptible beneath the collar of her coat. She'd hoped for a chance to discuss her new ideas about drone technology privately with Mr. Redmond, but that opportunity had just vanished.
Evelyn's eyes flashed with open disdain when she spotted Willow among the professors. She honestly couldn't believe Willow had the nerve to linger here—just like she'd shamelessly wormed her way into Evelyn's uncle's house years ago. Absolutely brazen.
Major led Evelyn respectfully to stand before the three professors. First, he wished Holcomb a happy birthday, then greeted the other two with polite nods. Finally, he turned to Willow and offered a courteous smile before introducing his companion.
"Mr. Redmond, Ms. Whitmore, Professor Payne—this is my girlfriend, Evelyn."
No one in the room, except Evelyn, knew about her connection to Beasley. Willow wasn't worried about Evelyn revealing that secret, but she was certain Evelyn was here for her—and would seize any chance to humiliate her.
To Evelyn, this must have seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Holcomb, for his part, had no interest in any gifts from Evelyn's brother. He shot Easton an exasperated look before turning to Major, his tone brisk. "Didn't you say you had a question for me? What is it? Out with it."
Holcomb, so gentle and warm with Willow, was a very different man around other students—sharp, impatient, and never one to mince words.
Major, having been warned by Evelyn, was fully prepared for this. He knew his teacher's bluntness could leave him floundering if he wasn't careful.
Choosing his words with care, Major began, "Mr. Redmond, I'm currently in charge of a drone development project at a Windsor & Co. subsidiary. I'd like to invite you to serve as our technical advisor for the project. Would you be interested?"
