During her days at the Research Institute, Willow used her downtime and the current situation to rework her revenge plan.
In her previous life, Beasley had done things that would shame even the lowest of men. Willow didn’t believe for a second that he’d turned over a new leaf this time around. If she stuck to her plan, she was certain she’d catch him red-handed.
He’d always been eager to “poach talent,” hadn’t he? Well, she’d dig a pit and let him fall right in. Someone like him would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. The only thing that could ruin her plan was if he didn’t make a move. But as long as he did, that was her chance.
Afterward, Willow took care of the rest of her unread messages one by one.
Among them was a report from the person she’d tasked with keeping an eye on Zoe Bellamy. The message had come in last week—Zoe had taken the bait, and now it was just a matter of waiting for the perfect moment to reel her in.
In her past life, Zoe had destroyed her father’s reputation and sent him to prison. This time, Willow was determined to return the favor—she’d make sure Zoe tasted the humiliation of public disgrace.
Willow simply replied, “Make sure you don’t miss.”
Maybe her mind was too wired from everything that night; she tossed and turned until well past two in the morning before finally managing to fall asleep.
The next morning at breakfast, Klein noticed the dark circles under his daughter’s eyes and asked with concern, “Having trouble sleeping in your own bed again after being away for so long?”
Willow shook her head. “No, Dad, it’s not that. I’ve just been on a creative streak lately—staying up late writing for a few days in a row. I look a little worn out, but don’t worry, I’ll get back to normal soon.”
Klein hesitated, then finally couldn’t help himself. “Willa, do you think I could read one of your books sometime?”
When she’d first mentioned her writing, Willow had said she was too shy to let family or friends see her work, so Klein hadn’t pressed. But he was curious—deep down, he longed for his daughter to share something she’d poured so much heart into.
Klein was floored—and thrilled. “The students in my class all love STAR’s sci-fi novels. I can’t believe my own daughter wrote them!”
Willow’s smile widened. “I never thought you’d know who STAR is.”
That feeling of achievement—making her father proud—was something not everyone got to experience. It was a special kind of joy.
“My daughter is incredible.” Klein was already leafing through the book, his whole face lit up with pride.
If she’d known it would make her father so happy, she never would’ve kept it from him for so long.
For the first time, Willow understood why Maurice wanted to throw a huge party to announce his own accomplishments to the world. The emotional payoff was just that good.
