From the man’s endless stream of insults, Lucy quickly realized they weren’t just a quarrelsome couple in the middle of a lovers’ spat; this was harassment, pure and simple. He was the only one clinging on—Willow wanted nothing to do with him.
With that understanding, Lucy found herself studying Willow again. The girl was strikingly pretty, and—more impressively—she’d stayed calm throughout the whole ordeal, not wasting a single word.
They were probably about the same age, Lucy thought with a sudden surge of admiration. If she’d been in Willow’s shoes, she would have panicked, maybe even ended up being manhandled or dragged away without anyone intervening. Who knew what could have happened then?
The scariest part was that the bystanders probably assumed the same thing Lucy had at first—that it was just a lovers’ quarrel, nothing to get involved in. No one would have stepped up to help.
The thought sent a chill down her spine.
“Thank you for agreeing to be my witness.” Willow’s voice broke through Lucy’s thoughts. She’d noticed the way Lucy’s face had gone pale and wanted to ease her nerves.
Lucy blinked, snapping back to the present—and right into the steady, clear gaze of Willow’s beautiful hazel eyes. Her heart skipped, and she felt herself blushing to the tips of her ears.
Turns out, it wasn’t just handsome guys who made her blush; gorgeous women did too.
“N-no problem. It’s the least I can do,” Lucy stammered, pressing a hand to her warm cheek. Then, almost in a whisper, she added, “But… do you think he’ll cause you trouble? That guy looked like he had connections.”
Lucy was just a small-town girl making her way in the big city. She’d never dealt with people like that, the kind who could get away with anything just by throwing money around. She’d heard stories—rich, entitled men who never faced consequences, no matter what they did.
Willow nodded, her eyes unwavering. “Trust me. We’ll both be fine.”
Lucy found herself believing her completely, nodding back almost without thinking.
A few minutes later, the police separated them to take their statements.
Thanks to her conversation with Willow, Lucy felt calm and collected as she recounted exactly what she’d seen and heard in the store. This time, there was no trace of fear in her voice.
