The next morning, Noah made sure to call Rosamund, who was still busy filming on set.
Rosamund had only wrapped up work in the middle of the night, so she’d just woken up when her mother’s call came through. Hearing what Noah had to say jolted her fully awake.
“That’s impossible. York and Eve both told me—very clearly—that Lionel is pursuing Cordelia. Mom, are you sure Cordelia isn’t just lying to you?” Rosamund gripped her phone tighter.
But the way her brow furrowed gave away her true feelings.
She knew her little sister well. Cordelia wasn’t the type to lie—and frankly, she’d never stoop so low.
Noah replied, “I did wonder if maybe your sister just didn’t want to date someone from the Scotts, so she made up a story about Lionel already having a girlfriend. Or maybe Lionel was afraid Cordelia would turn him down flat, so he invented a relationship to keep her from rejecting him outright—and planned to win her over slowly. But then Cordelia showed me a photo of them together. She pointed out the woman next to Lionel—Juliette—said she was his girlfriend. She’s very pretty and certainly knows how to draw attention.”
“And even if Juliette is just someone Lionel hired to put on an act for Cordelia, there’s no guarantee she won’t start to take it seriously. After all, Lionel’s family background is enough to tempt anyone.”
“So you want me to look into this Juliette?” Rosamund asked.
Truth was, even if her mother hadn’t brought it up, she would have done it anyway.
But she had an image to maintain. Every move she made, every thought she allowed herself, had to fit the persona she’d so carefully crafted—a generous, upright woman who would never stoop to anything underhanded.
Even if she knew perfectly well she wasn’t half as virtuous as she pretended to be, as long as everyone else believed it, that was enough.
“Willow?” Rosamund’s voice sharpened with suspicion. “Where did you hear that name?”
Noah noticed her daughter’s reaction but answered truthfully, “Cordelia told me last night. She said Willow was at Lionel’s cousin’s birthday party, too. When everyone took a group photo, Willow was standing right next to Juliette. They looked pretty close—probably friends.”
Rosamund’s frown deepened. Why did that troublesome woman have to show up everywhere?
And now there was Juliette to deal with as well.
If anyone tried to ruin her plans, she’d make sure they regretted it.
