“What exactly happened to you in your past life?” Waller pressed, his questions tumbling out. “You really have no idea who kidnapped you?”
“Or is it that you suspect someone, but just can’t prove it?”
“Is there anything I can do to help you?”
The words rushed out of Waller in an uncharacteristic barrage, one after another, until he noticed the stunned look on Willow’s face. Only then did he realize he’d let his composure slip.
Thankfully, the night offered him some cover, masking his embarrassment.
Willow watched him, a little amused by his awkwardness. Suddenly, all of Waller’s strange behavior from earlier made sense to her.
He was so anxious about her safety because he knew the tragedy she’d suffered in her previous life.
He really was someone she could trust.
A gentle warmth blossomed in Willow’s chest.
“There are some things I do need your help with,” she said without hesitation. “You were reborn after my death, right? So do you know exactly where I fell?”
Waller shook his head. “I’m sorry. When my father told me about your death, I didn’t ask for the details. All I know is you were kidnapped and taken to an abandoned vacation house on one of the islands. My father said when headquarters got your distress signal, they sent a team to rescue you right away, but… it was too late.”
In truth, his father had also told him that the kidnappers had tried to assault Willow, and he hadn’t had the heart to hear the rest.
If only he’d known he would get another chance at life—he would have pressed his father for every detail: who the kidnappers were, who was really behind it all.
The more Waller thought about it, the more regret gnawed at him.
But Willow only said, “You don’t need to apologize. At least now I know it happened on an island.”
She hesitated, then asked softly, “But why did you come back, too?”
Willow shook her head. “He doesn’t.”
He didn’t even know she was STAR. She’d never mattered to him—not really.
Willow hesitated, unsure if she should tell Waller about Beasley’s motives for wanting her dead.
But she wasn’t ready to lay bare that humiliating piece of her past—not yet.
“So, if you suspect your ex, what’s your plan?” Waller asked quietly. “Cut him out of your life, or… get revenge?”
“I want revenge,” Willow said, her voice steady and cold.
“But what happened before hasn’t happened yet in this life,” Waller pointed out. “That means there’s no evidence. Nothing to prove he’ll hurt you.”
He didn’t believe for a second that this hadn’t crossed her mind.
