After the young man apologized to Willow, Ablitt gave everyone a quick round of introductions.
Turned out, the young guy was Ablitt's younger aunt's son—currently a college student in town. He'd just finished seeing a movie with his girlfriend for the weekend, so they'd decided to grab some barbecue nearby.
Clearly, he was trying to play matchmaker for Willow and his cousin. After greeting Willow, he grinned and asked, "Hey, Willow, have you heard of STAR? You know, that insanely popular science fiction author? Ever heard of her?"
The moment STAR was mentioned, his girlfriend lit up with excitement. "Ablitt, isn't STAR supposed to be super handsome?"
Willow and Ablitt exchanged a quick look.
For a second, the couple's enthusiasm left them both at a loss.
Plus, Willow was maybe only a year or two older than the guy, but he kept calling her "ma'am" with every sentence—it was a bit much.
Noticing Willow's discomfort, the young man quickly tugged his girlfriend's hand. "Hey, don't interrupt! I'm talking to her right now. And besides, my cousin's already said he respects Ms. STAR's privacy—he's not about to spill any secrets, so stop trying to fish for answers."
Willow was speechless, but since she'd been called out again, she nodded politely. "Yeah, I've heard of her."
The young man perked up at her answer. "Our cousin's Ms. STAR's exclusive editor! Isn't that awesome?"
If STAR was a legend, well, so was his cousin—after all, he'd recognized her talent and signed her on!
Ablitt fought the urge to cover his face. If only these two knew that the famous Ms. STAR they admired so much was standing right in front of them…
Once the young couple disappeared into the restaurant, Willow sighed, "You're really close with your cousin."
Willow had a few cousins herself on her father's side, but they'd never really been close. To be honest, it wasn't her choice—they simply didn't want anything to do with her. She knew why, and as a result, she'd stopped trying. These days, she kept things civil on the surface, more out of respect for her father than anything else. Otherwise…
Ablitt was still a little dazed from Willow's easy compliment; his mind was slow to catch up. By the time he realized she'd said something else to him, Willow was already saying goodbye. "Well, I'll head home now. If anything comes up, just call me."
Snapped out of his trance, Ablitt managed, "Alright. Get home safe."
Willow dipped her head in a brief farewell, then turned and walked away.
Ablitt watched her slender figure recede into the evening, then glanced down at the brand-new jacket draped over his arm—completely untouched. He let out a silent sigh.
