"You're calling off the engagement?" Renee asked in disbelief.

Furious, she yanked off her incredibly expensive sheet mask and tossed it in the trash.

"Tell me—where have you been?" she demanded angrily. "Did you get into an argument with that conniving vixen again? Are you planning to just hand Donovan over on a silver platter?"

Anne flashed her a bitter smile. "Stop asking me all these pointless questions, Mom. Now that she's 'back from the dead,' Donovan is planning to marry her.

"After everything that I've been through, I'm finally going to admit that I've lost. I don't want to fight for something that doesn't belong to me anymore."

"Are you trying to piss me off?" Renee spat in a fit of rage. "Fighting? Everything you're fighting for has always been yours to begin with!"

"I've spent all these years paving the way for you to marry into an elite family like the Kanes. I wanted you and your future children to live a comfortable life instead of suffering like I did! How could you let me down like this?" she barked.

Renee was an orphan. In order to get to where she was, she had to be a cold-hearted, corrupt and scheming woman who was only driven by her self-interests. That was the only way she was able to survive in the ruthless business world.

Having endured countless hardships to get to this point, her only wish was for her children to be born into the ranks of the wealthy and live a privileged life. In her opinion, the Kane family seemed like the most prestigious family in upper-class society.

"I don't care about what happened, Anne. I must make you the daughter-in-law of the Kanes no matter what," Renee said through gritted teeth.

She added, "Don't concern yourself with Donovan and Giselle's relationship. I've already settled everything with the rest of the Kane family anyway.

"It's just a matter of time before you're officially wedded to Donovan. He can't do anything about it unless he disowns his entire family!"

Anne drank some water and didn't respond. Moments later, she replied calmly, "I've decided to give up on Donovan for good, Mom. Don't try to talk me out of this.

"This is my life, and I know what's best for myself. I'm trying to tell you that I've come up with a new idea."
