Chapter 16
Sophia sat in her room, staring blankly at the mountains of luxury goods. From the day she arrived at the Sterling estate, a nonstop stream of items had been brought to her.
Haute couture gowns, limited–edition jewelry, designer bags… they had nearly filled the entire space.
“Miss Sophia, this is the pink diamond brooch the young master just won at auction.”
“These are the latest seasonal gowns, flown in from Milan. The young master said you like red, so he ordered the entire collection.”
“And these bags…”
Sophia finally held up a hand. “Look at this room. Is there any space left?”
The maids exchanged glances. One of them immediately pressed her earpiece and whispered, “Young master, Miss Sophia says the room is too small.”
Sophia deadpanned, “…That’s not what I meant.”
The maid replied earnestly, “The young master’s orders are to spend without limit.”
Sophia pressed her hand to her forehead. “Does your young master usually throw money away like this?”
“The young master is very wealthy,” the maid said seriously. “For the Sterling family, this is just pocket change.”
Sophia took a deep breath and finally asked the question that had been on her mind for days. “I’ve been here for almost a week. May I meet your young master?”
The maid hesitated. “The young master said… he’s not mentally prepared yet.”
Sophia laughed in disbelief. “He ‘married‘ me, and he’s not prepared?” She stood up. “Fine, then I’m leaving.”
The moment the words left her mouth, all the maids suddenly stood at attention, bowing respectfully. “Young master!”
Sophia froze and turned toward the door.
Footsteps approached, and a tall, slender figure appeated. The man wore a simple
simple white shirt and black trousers that accentuated his long legs. His features were handsome and refined, and he carried himself with an air of gentle nobility.
Sophia was stunned.
This was Alexander Sterling? The supposedly “dying” heir? He looked healthy enough to take on a dozen assassins single- handedly. She had arrived here fully prepared to be a widow. But the Sterling estate wasn’t dreary or filled with the scent of medicine. It was vibrant, and everyone had welcomed her with open arms.
She had tried to see Alexander, but the Sterling family elders had repeatedly blocked her.
“Sophia, my dear, Alexander isn’t fit to see anyone right now…”
